The deadline is Feb. 28 to apply for the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, which takes winners to Japan and Korea for a study tour of cultural sites and media organizations in those countries.

Nine winners from universities around the country will receive the all-expenses paid trip, which is set for June 13-27 this year.

Last year’s winners visited some of the world’s largest newspapers, the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, and the Imperial Palace Park, where they learned about Roy Howard’s 1933 interview with the Emperor of Japan, the first ever by an American.

The competition, established in 1984 in cooperation with the Indiana University School of Journalism, honors the memory of Roy W. Howard, who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920. Asia was an area of special interest to Howard, who traveled and reported on the area extensively, even while leading major news organizations.

School of Journalism Dean Brad Hamm, a Howard scholar and frequent traveler to Asia, leads the trip. The school has several ties to Howard, including housing his archives at Ernie Pyle Hall.

The Scripps Foundation administers the contest. Download information here or by visiting the foundation’s Web site. Winners will be announced March 17.
