Apply by Oct. 12 for Keating feature writing contest

Gena Asher | Sept. 20, 2009
The Indianapolis Press Club Foundation invites undergraduate students at Indiana colleges and universities to participate in the 2009 Tom Keating Feature Writing Program, which awards cash prizes based on an on-deadline feature writing contest and one-on-one critiques with professionals. Deadline to enter is Oct. 12.

The program tests the reporting and writing skills of the finalists selected from initial entries. Each entry should include three feature writing examples of the applicant’s work. More information on contest rules and a contest application may be obtained by e-mail at keating-info@indypressfoundation.org.

The 23rd annual Keating challenge is Nov. 13-14 in Indianapolis. Ten finalists will receive an expenses-paid weekend in Indy and be eligible for awards totaling $5,500 in cash prizes. Saturday evening, the finalists will be recognized and the top-three writing challenge winners rewarded at the “Indianapolis Press Club Foundation Annual Awards Dinner: Celebrating Excellence in Student Journalism,” at the Skyline Club.

The Tom Keating Feature Writing Challenge is named in honor of the late longtime Indianapolis Star columnist Tom Keating, who worked for The Star for 19 years, 14 of which were dedicated to a five-days-a-week column. He authored some 3,500 columns, becoming one of the city’s most beloved writers. Keating also taught writing courses at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Since its inception in 1986, the Keating program has donated approximately $100,000 to Indiana college and university students. The IPCF also funds other scholarships in support of Indiana students pursuing writing-related studies.

Gifts and inquiries may be forwarded to the Foundation’s Executive Director, Jenny Labalme, at P.O. Box 40923, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46240-0923. More information on the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation is available at its Web site.
