IU journalism student Greg Rosenstein, right, was an intern at MLB.com last year. Applications are due Nov. 1 for next year's sports internships.
Are you a budding sportswriter, broadcaster or sports organization public relations professional? Gain on-the-job experience at an internship tailored to your line of study at organizations ranging from Sports Illustrated to the Big Ten Network to the Chicago Tribune.

The deadline is Nov. 1 to apply for a variety of sports journalism internships provided by the IU School of Journalism’s National Sports Journalism Center. The center secured slots for a number of IU students from both the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses with news and sports organizations, leagues and teams.

Several have specific requirements for the interns, according to center director Tim Franklin, who also arranged internships last year. Applicants should carefully read the requirements before applying and be sure they include all required info.

To apply:
On a separate sheet of paper, list the internships for which you are applying, with your top three preferences in order. Your application also must include:

  • One‐page resume
  • One‐page cover letter
  • Five published clips, unless otherwise noted in posting
  • Video resume tape, if applicable
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Essays, if required

Do not send Web links or paste stories in e-mails. Print stories should be attached as PDFs. Your resume should include your overall GPA. All of these elements need to be sent in one e-mail. Do not send applications piecemeal.

You need a total of two reference letters for all the internships. They can be addressed “To Whom It May Concern.” At least one of the letters should be from a professor or faculty adviser. Do not have reference letters sent to us separately.

Cover letters should be addressed to:
Timothy A. Franklin
Director, IU National Sports Journalism Center
535 W. Michigan St., Room 555
Indianapolis, IN 46202

A committee of advisers and faculty on both campuses will screen applications and submit finalists to the organizations. The finalists then may be contacted to interview with the organizations, either in person or on the phone. Franklin said the organizations may decide not to interview all of the finalists the school submits and that each organization makes its own final selections.

If the committee chooses you as a finalist, you will be notified by Nov. 10. If you are not chosen as a finalist by the committee, you still may apply to the organization on your won.

E-mail applications no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 1 to sojsport@indiana.edu. E-mail questions to Franklin or Career Services director Marcia Debnam.
