Students win honors at SPJ regional conference

Students and their IU publications won yet another set of top honors at the Society for Professional Journalists' Region 5 meeting in Erlanger, Ky., April 2.

The Indiana Daily Student and Inside magazine took first place in their categories and several students won or placed in individual categories of the Mark of Excellence competition. Judges evaluated more than 4,000 entries to determine winners. First place winners move on to national competition, with winners announced in May.

Nine students attended the conference, which included workshops for professionals and student members on a variety of topics, including writing mechanics, ethics and legal issues.

  • First place, “21st century soldiers,” by Biz Carson and Thomas Miller, Online In-Depth Reporting
  • First place, Caitlin Johnston, Mickey Woods and Sean Morrison, Online Opinion and Commentary
  • Second place, idsnews.com, Best Affiliated Website
  • Second place, Sean Morrison, Sports Column Writing
