Last year, students such as Joanna Barnett visited the Digital Pavilion in Korea, where they checked out the latest technology. More than 80 students are traveling over spring break to learn about media around the world.
Instead of soaking up the sun, more than 80 students and several faculty and staff are on the road over spring break learning about new media, visiting alumni and news organizations, and even tracing Ernie Pyle’s World War II path in Europe.

Four of the groups are classes that include travel as part of the curriculum:
  • J460 Technology, Change and News travels to South Korea to learn more about media in this fast-changing country, a leader in technology. Students will visit media outlets as well as historic locations.
  • J460 International Public Relations heads to Japan to explore the culture and media practices, networking with alumni and visiting news and public relations organizations.
  • J460 From London to Normandy: In the footsteps of Ernie Pyle leads students through a path the famed correspondent traveled during WWII. In class, students have read Pyle’s columns and will reflect on them as they see the area for themselves. They’ll also hear from media leaders and explore cultural sites.
  • is taking in the famous South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. They will attend several sessions of the Interactive Festival to explore ways new media – and social media in particular – are influencing how journalists conduct their work.

Students in the honors program travel to Florida to sharpen their skills at the Poynter Institute, where the study and practice of journalism is the focus. These Ernie Pyle Scholars will take workshops with noted journalists who often conduct sessions for professionals, and will visit newspapers and other media organizations.

All the groups will be blogging about their experiences. Follow their travels by reading their blog pages:
