Journalism students Rachel Stark and CJ Lotz placed first and second, respectively, in the weekend’s 2010 Thomas Keating Feature Writing Contest in Indianapolis.

And, IU students won four of five additional scholarship awards presented at the Saturday night ceremony capping a two-day event held for the last 24 years in honor of the late Indianapolis Star columnist Thomas Keating. The Indiana Press Club Foundation sponsors this scholarship program and awarded more than $13,000 this year.

Sixty-nine students applied for the contest, and based on their entries, a dozen, including seven IU students, were selected to compete Saturday. Organizers give contestants a feature story assignment by dropping them off at one location in Indianapolis, where they use their reporting skills to craft a story. They return to the Indianapolis Star newsroom later that day to write their features.

This year, Stark said, organizers took participants to find stories at the Bands of America Grand Nationals for high school marching bands at nearby Lucas Oil Stadium.

Stark won $2,500 for her first place finish and Lotz won $1,200 for second place. Journalism students also won these scholarships: Stark, a $2,000 Early Scholarship; Sean Morrison, $2,000 Hemphill Scholarship; Caitlin Johnston, $2,000 Early Scholarship; and Stephanie Kuzydym, who applied but was not a contestant Saturday, $1,000 Lennis Scholarship.

Other IU students competing were Biz Carson, Charlie Scudder and Avi Zaleon.
