“The student editors and the faculty advisers were great,” said Millman, who starts his new assignment June 15. “But it was on you, as the reporter, to cover your beats and know what stories mattered.”
Millman has been with the magazine since its inception in 1998, working as an associate editor, then editor. He also blogs about sports gambling for ESPN, and he has written or co-authored several books, including Iceman: My Fighting Life with Chuck Lidell, and They Call Me Baba Booey. He is co-author with Shawn Coyne of two best-sellers, The Odds and The Ones Who Hit The Hardest.
Millman also is the newest member of IU's National Sports Journalism Center's advisory board, director Tim Franklin announced this week. Franklin said Millman is looking forward to being more involved with the center and the School of Journalism.
IU is not far from Millman's thoughts, and he credits IU’s size for helping him develop some necessary journalistic skills.
“The student body is so big you had to work hard to find people to connect with,” he said. “That meant being open to new relationships, reaching out, asking questions, taking classes outside of your comfort zone, going to bars to hear bands you had never heard of. Those are all the things that make you comfortable when reporting a story because you are forced to be curious.”
This is where his work ethic started, he said, the time when he realized the best way to impress bosses is to let them know you are someone they can count on.
“They can give you an assignment and know you’ll hand it in or package it well on deadline, without a lot of drama and without them constantly needing to check on you,” Millman said.
While Millman credits IU with at least some of his success, alumni achievements such as this reflect well on the school, too, said Franklin.
“It's yet another highly visible confirmation that the IU School of Journalism is producing top talent and future leaders in the media industry, including the sports media business,” Franklin said. “I've only spent a little time with Chad, but his passion for sports and storytelling just oozes out. He'll provide a real creative energy for ESPN The Magazine, and I'm sure that he'll put his own stamp on the book and take it in some new directions.”
