Indy SPJ awards faculty, staff, students

School of Journalism faculty, staff and students were among the winners at the Indiana professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual "Best of the Best" banquet Friday night in Indianapolis.

The contest, divided into print, broadcast and Web divisions with reporting, editing and design components in each of those, honors work completed in 2009. The competition includes professional and college student divisions.

Professional division:

Professor emeritus Peter Jacobi won a first place for arts/entertainment feature for his music reporting and columns in The (Bloomington) Herald-Times.

Associate professor Steve Raymer won a first place for feature photograph for his work in Bloom magazine.

Adjunct lecturer and Web editor Gena Asher won a second place in consumer reporting and an honorable mention in magazine print feature, both for articles she wrote for Indiana Alumni Magazine.

Adjunct lecturer Steve Higgs won a second place in coverage of the environment for his work in NUVO magazine.

Several students working as professionals won for their work at WTIU and WFIU:

Graduate student Ann Shea won first place honors for sports reporting and feature, and a second place for feature for her work at WTIU.

Graduate student Shameka Neely won three honorable mentions for use of sound, documentary and environment coverage for her work for WTIU.

For her work at WFIU, undergraduate Regan McCarthy won first place honors for feature and sports reporting, two second place honors for investigative reporting and criminal justice reporting, and a third for use of sound.

Also, Talking Sports: The Diversity Divide, a WTIU program about the National Sports Journalism Center‘s panel event last fall, won a second place in coverage of minority affairs.

College division:

Junior Dave Leno shared a first place in sports reporting with WTIU’s Bill Shaw for a broadcast piece.

Undergrads Biz Carson, Peter Stevenson and Brad Zehr of the Indiana Daily Student won a first place for spot news.

Lauren Clason of the IDS won a first for non-deadline news.

Brian Spegele of the IDS won a first place for feature writing.

Sarah Brubeck, Nick Cusack and Carrie Schedler won a first place for a print series in the IDS.

Stephanie Kuzydym and Kevin Loughery won a first place for sports reporting for the IDS.

Rachel Stark won a first place for editorial writing in the IDS.

CJ Lotz won a first place for in-depth/series reporting for Inside magazine.

Larry Buchanan, Ellis Latham-Brown and Zach Hetrick won a first place for page one/cover design for Inside magazine.

The IDS staff won a first place for design other than page one.

Justin Salsburey and Larry Buchanan won a first place for informational graphic for the Little 500 Race Guide.

The IDS news staff won a second place award for best college journalism Web site.
