Trevor Brown (left) and Carrie Ritchie collected the Mark of Excellence award for the IDS. The newspaper won first place in the Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper category at the SPJ Region 5 awards Saturday.
For IU student media staffers, the kudos just keep coming. At Saturday’s Society of Professional Journalists Region 5 conference, six student journalists and the staff of the Indiana Daily Student came away with honors to add to this spring’s haul of gold crowns, circles, plaques and certificates.

SPJ’s Region 5 Director Richard Roth handed out 117 Mark of Excellence awards to outstanding college journalists in a post-luncheon ceremony Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union.

IU student media winners included:
  • Indiana Daily Student, first place for Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper published at least four times per week.
  • Ashley Wilkerson, Jay Seawell, Geoffrey Miller and Aaron Bernstein, first place for Best Sports Photography.
  • Allie Townsend, first place for Feature Writing.
  • Kristi Oloffson, third place for In-depth Reporting.

First place winners go on to compete at the national level. Those winners will be announced at SPJ’s national conference in Atlanta in September.
