| From left, Lea Wilcox of the Arbutus and IDS editor-in-chief Carrie Ritchie traveled to New York to pick up the Apple Awards. |
“I was saddened by the thought that Dave would never get to see the finished book,” Arbutus editor Lauren Cooper said in an e-mail interview. “But earning the award with his name on it seems like his seal of approval.”
The Arbutus as well as the Feb. 14, 2008, issue of the IDS won the David L. Adams Apple Award for Best of Show at the College Media Advisers (CMA) national convention in New York City. But when the publications entered the competition, they had no idea the award had been renamed for Adams.
“This came as a complete surprise,” said Nancy Comiskey, interim director of student media. “I think it says a lot about Dave’s contribution to student media, not only here at IU, but nationwide.”
“This year has been so tough for everyone,” IDS editor Carrie Ritchie said in an e-mail. “For many of us, losing Dave was like losing a third parent. He was a friend to us all, as well as an advocate for our rights and our publications, and he can never be replaced.
“Winning this award made us feel like we succeeded in carrying on his vision for student media, and it helped ease part of the sadness and emptiness we were all feeling in the wake of his passing.”
The IDS issue that won the Adams award was focused on the beginning of the end for former IU Men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. Comiskey said it came out right after the NCAA released the findings of its investigation in Sampson’s conduct.
“I just think it’s an excellent paper,” Comiskey said. “The way the staffs worked together to get this out on such a short timeline is really a testament to their hard work and dedication. I’m very proud of what they were able to do.”
The School of Journalism’s student media wasn’t only honored by the CMA. The Arbutus, IDS and INside Magazine all took home awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association as well. A full list of awardees is below.
