SoJ Web Report | May 12, 2010
School of Journalism students are headed around the globe for summer experiences, some through travel courses and others as part of an internship program. Here’s the line-up:
- Students in J460 Media in Latin America: Messages and Moguls: Dictators and Democracy, taught by professor Bonnie Brownlee, leave May 12 for Santiago, Chile. The class work has focused on media issues in Latin America, with an emphasis on what’s often called the “media environment.” The media environment includes historical, economic, political, legal and societal factors that have shaped and continue to shape the media today, in an age of the Internet and instant communication. Students will visit media organizations and cultural sites. Follow their experiences online.
- J460 Reporting on HIV/AIDS in Africa, taught by professor Jim Kelly, is offered in Summer Session I and features travel to Eldoret and Nairobi, Kenya, May 21 to June 14. The class work introduces students to the basic pathology of HIV/AIDS, with a specific emphasis on the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa.
Students also will learn about the culture of East Africa and about the media system in Kenya. While in Eldoret for three weeks, students will be assigned to teams with communication students from Moi University to report on health care topics in the area, with special attention on the various programs of IU-Kenya Partnership’s AMPATH project. Keep track of their work at their blog. - An honors class of Ernie Pyle Scholars will spend eight weeks in London, taking a class and working as interns at London-area media organizations. Led by assistant professor Lesa Hatley Major, the students also will travel and visit media outlets in the area. Read about their work and cultural experiences at their blog.
Individuals also are globe-trekking to learn more about their craft or to learn more about the world.
- Senior Sam Glover followed up with a guest speaker to land his summer internship with Fleishman-Hillard in Sydney, Australia. In class this spring, Walter Jennings of the company talked to Glover’s public relations class via Skype. Glover sent a thank you note and asked Jennings if he could send his resume. Based on that, Glover had a phone interview and was offered an intern position. Follow his summer work at his blog.
- Senior Larry Buchanan is blogging from Florence, where he is taking a drawing class and an art history course for six weeks. You can read about his work and see some of his drawings at www.larrybuch.com/blog.
- Senior Courtney Miller is one of 1,000 delegates to the Fifth World Youth Congress July 31 to Aug. 13 in Turkey. The international conference is for young people to meet and share skills and experiences with one another and government and development professionals. You can read about the conference at the Web site and, later this summer, read Miller’s blog on the school Web site.
