Journalism students report on spring break travel

Like their classmates, four groups of students headed to exotic locations for spring break, March 14-22. But these students studied media in other countries and at one of the nation’s premier journalism labs — and soaked up the local culture along the way.

Ernie Pyle Scholars, Class of 2011, spent the week at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., where they talked with professionals, participated in workshops and came back armed with new skills. Professor Dave Boeyink led that trip.

The J460 Footsteps of Ernie Pyle class went to England and France with associate professor Owen Johnson, the second time the class has traveled to places the famous World War II correspondent made famous in his columns. They followed Pyle’s path from London to Paris, including visiting the beach at Normandy.

Ralph Winslow Visiting Professor Jim Bright escorted J460 International Public Relations to Japan to meet with news and public relations organizations. Students in this class visited Japan last spring, too.

Assistant professor Lesa Hatley Major’s J460 Technology, Change and the News class visited South Korea to explore media in that country famous for its swift technological revolution. This is the first time a class has traveled to this country.
