Eighteen high school students will spend the last week in June working with legends such as NBA player and coach Isiah Thomas, IU men’s basketball coach Tom Crean and others as they participate in the first Diversity Sports Media Institute in Indianapolis.

Organized by the IU National Sports Journalism Center and sponsored by the McCormick Foundation, the institute’s goals are to give high school students from Indianapolis and Chicago a real-world experience in sports media, and show them a career path in sports beyond the court or the playing field, according to NSJC director Tim Franklin.

The students will learn the basics of sports journalism, then practice their skills interviewing nationally-known coaches, athletes and media personalities. Their work culminates in a 30-minute sports TV show, and a website with stories, photos and videos.

In addition to Thomas and Crean, speakers include Ron Hunter, IUPUI men’s basketball coach who brought national attention to a philanthropy that supplies shoes to children by appearing on the court barefoot, and Chicago-area journalist Fred Mitchell.

Staff who will help guide the reporting and production include seasoned professionals from Indianapolis-based broadcast outlets, sports organizations and two students who will serve as mentors.

Franklin said the hope is that this will become an annual event that eventually could help improve diversity in the sports media industry. The center hosted a panel on this topic last year.

Students who complete the institute, graduate from high school and attend college will receive a $500 voucher from the McCormick Foundation. The most outstanding student will receive a special award from Indiana University.
