Students and visitors to Ernie Pyle Hall can learn the highlights of the school’s history thanks to a new installation outside the auditorium that kicks off the school’s upcoming centennial celebration next year.
The Centennial Wall displays the School of Journalism’s beginnings in 1911 and covers the ensuing decades with significant dates and events. Produced by the school’s communication team, led and designed by marketing director Kurtis Beavers, the installation is made possible by a gift from alumni Jim and Sue Hetherington of Indianapolis, both 1953 graduates.
Alumna Marge Blewett, associate professor Owen Johnson, Roy W. Howard Professor David Weaver and graduate student Valerie Aquila are among the others who contributed to the content for the wall panels.
The Centennial Wall covers only the highlights, said communications director Beth Moellers, but the year’s planned events will celebrate other changes and developments.
“We already have planned celebrations throughout the year in different cities ,” she said. Those cities include Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., and St. Petersburg, Fla., with a fall celebration in Bloomington.
Other developments include a special centennial website and enlisting alumni as “marshals” who will coordinate events and other alumni in their areas. If you are an alumna or alumnus interested in learning more about the marshal project, contact Moellers by e-mail or at 812-855-6317.
