APSE first vice president Michael Anastasi of the Salt Lake Tribune discusses membership during the Executive Committee opening session. Over 90 members attended the 2011 Winter Conference in Indianapolis.

Having solid journalism skills and ability to work in several media are two of the recommendations from panelists at the “Sports Journalism: Where is it going?” discussion Monday evening at the IUPUI Campus Center.

As part of the Associated Press Sports Editors’ winter conference, the IU National Sports Journalism Center hosted the event, which included panelists Gerry Ahern of Yahoo Sports and Rivals.com; Mary Byrne, AP deputy sports editor; Garry D. Howard, editor-in-chief of Sporting News; Phil Kaplan, sports editor at the Knoxville News Sentinel; and Monte Lorell, managing editor of sports at USA Today.

Speaking to an audience of APSE conference attendees and IU students, the speakers said young journalists must be willing to try new journalism tools, such as multimedia or social media, and the industry itself also must adapt to different delivery systems, such as new technology.

The conference also featured workshops and discussions on a variety of topics and featuring speakers such as APSE members and leaders of national sports organizations.
