The Indiana University School of Journalism gained re-accreditation during the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications’ meeting earlier this month.

At its May 2 meeting in Arlington, Va., the council made accreditation decisions for 21 schools and now accredits 112 in the United States and one outside the country. The council conducts voluntary reviews for schools with professional journalism and mass communications programs.

A team from ACEJMC visited the school last fall in preparation for making the decision to re-accredit. IU’s journalism program has been accredited since 1948.

The School of Journalism was among 10 undergraduate programs to gain re-accreditation. Two schools were accredited for the first time, one was denied accreditation, three received provisional accreditation and three moved from provisional to accreditation status.

The council also elected three new members and re-elected one member. Pam Luecke, Donald W. Reynolds professor of business journalism for the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Washington and Lee University, was elected chair of the accrediting committee.
