Alumnus Donald Winslow is one of two winners of NPPA's Sprague awards. Here, he introduces Michel du Cille, BA'85, before a workshop during the centennial celebration in September.
School of Journalism alumnus Donald R. Winslow, photographer and current editor of the National Press Photographers Association magazine, is one of two winners of the NPPA's Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, the organization's highest honor.

Joe Torelli of Apple Inc. is the other winner of the annual award, which recognizes individuals who advance and elevate photojournalism by their conduct, initiative, leadership and skill, or for unusual service or achievement beneficial to photojournalism and technological advances.

Winslow was an IU journalism student in the 1970s and, in the story about him on the NPPA website, he talks about his experience at IU, especially what he learned from professors Will Counts and John Ahlhauser. He was one of many journalism students from that decade who attended the journalism centennial in September, where he reconnected with Ahlhauser and other classmates.

After leaving IU, Winslow embarked on a 35 year career in photojournalism. He was photography editor for the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post, the Pittsburgh Press, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Republic in Columbus, Ind., and the Wabash (Ind.) Plain Dealer.

He has worked as a photographer, picture and graphics editor, director of photography, writer, and new media producer. Winslow worked for Reuters as a photojournalist and editor in Washington, D.C., and for Reuters NewMedia in Reston, Va., and New York City.
