How to Register for Internship Credit

After you receive permission to obtain internship credit, you, your internship supervisor and the journalism career services director must agree upon the number of credit hours for the internship.
Currently, internship credit is counted as a general elective outside the major. If you matriculate after Fall 2007, your internship credit counts within the journalism major.
Once the number of credits have been determined, you may register for the internship. If the internship is during the fall or spring semester, you must register during the semester in which the internship occurs. If the internship is in the summer, you have two options for registration:

Option 1:
Register in Summer Session I or Summer Session II, depending on when the internship begins.

You will be billed for the number of internship credit hours at the regular credit hour rate for in-state or out-of-state students. Because the internship may last longer than the session in which you enroll, you will be given a temporary grade of “I” for incomplete at the end of the session. The “I” will be changed into an “S” following successful completion of the internship and receipt of the employer’s agreement form and your final evaluation form.

Option 2:
Register in the fall semester following the internship.

You will not be billed for the internship credit hours if the number of internship credits falls within the university’s flat tuition fee for 12 to 17 credits. If the number of internship credits means the total for the semester exceeds 17 hours, you will be billed. If you are in the latter situation, you should choose Option 1.
All students who register in the fall for credit from a summer internship will be required to take an additional eight-week course to fulfill the university’s mandate that students register for credit during the semester in which the coursework occurs. The eight-week course will be designed to provide an opportunity to make the most of your summer internship through a combination of sharing experiences and academic career planning work.
