An internship provides real-world journalism experience whether at a major news organization, a small advertising firm or a neighborhood weekly. Internship experience gives you material for portfolios and provides important listings on resumes.
School of Journalism students have worked at organizations as traditional as newspapers and television stations and as diverse as MTV and the Daily Show.
Finding an internship
- Use IUJournalismCareers.com Web site. You must register to access the journalism school’s main resource for finding internships and jobs. At this site, you’ll also find help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing and other career information. Check this site often for announcements and updates.
- Use Internship Search to look for internships in specific media or geographic areas.
- Use Going Global to find opportunities around the world.
For-credit internships
Journalism majors may earn a maximum of three credit hours for internships. You may earn credits all at once or one at a time based on the number of hours worked. For each hour of credit, you must work a minimum of 120 hours. You and your internship supervisor determine the number of hours and weeks you will work.The School of Journalism career services director must approve the internship before it begins. All internships must pertain to subject matter taught in the school.
Interested in pursuing a for-credit internship? Complete the following steps:
- Read How to Register for Credit and select Option I or Option II.
- Complete the Application for Internship Credit form.
- E-mail Career Services to make an appointment to obtain permission to register for internship credit using Option I or Option II.
- Register for internship credit.
- Keep a weekly journal during the internship. This information is for your own records.
- Complete a Student Final Internship Evaluation Form at the end of the internship and submit a double-spaced, typed 2,000-word essay summarizing the internship.
- Secure a digital photograph (300 dpi or better) taken at the internship site, showing yourself and the company’s logo or nameplate. Upload it to the school on the Student Final Internship Evaluation Form in the space provided. The photo will be used for the school’s records and promotional materials.
Employers
In order for students to receive credit, the internship supervisor must complete the following:- Internship Agreement Form
- Midpoint Evaluation Form
- Final Evaluation form

Non-credit internships
You may find and undertake internships that are not for course credit. For these, requirements are few. You need only complete a short Student Final Internship Evaluation Form at the end of your internship.The School of Journalism would like for you to secure a digital photograph (300 dpi or better) taken at the internship site, showing yourself and the company’s logo or nameplate, and upload it to the school using this form. The photos will be used for the school’s records and promotional materials.
