Internships:

  • Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service (March 5, 2010)
    The Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service is now accepting applications for its summer 2010 internship program. The program focuses on the nonprofit sector and is held in partnership with Georgetown University, combining substantive professional experience for 30 hours a week with a challenging academic experience. The institute will be held in June and July, 2010. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until March 5, 2010. Students who complete their application by the early deadline of Dec. 4 will receive a five percent tuition discount as well as priority scholarship consideration and internship placement.   • Courier-Journal (Nov. 18)
    Recruiters from the (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal, visit Nov. 18 to interview students for 12-week, full-time paid summer internships in reporting or design. Preference will be given to juniors and above, although there may be space for sophomores. All applicants must submit a resume and cover letter (500 words or less). For reporting, students must also submit a maximum of 10 published clips. Unpublished pieces are accepted if you do not have published work. For design, students must also submit up to 20 samples of work, including layouts, graphics, illustrations and cartoons.

    A sign-up sheet will be on the door of EP202 beginning at 8 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, for juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates. First come, first served. Sophomores may sign up beginning Friday, 8 a.m., if spaces remain.
  • National Geographic (Nov. 30)
    National Geographic magazine has a graphic artist internship and an art research and reporting internship available for spring. Deadline: Nov. 30. To get complete details, e-mail Career Services Director Marcia Debnam.
  • The Los Angeles Times Summer Internships (Jan. 1)
    The Los Angeles times offers 10 weeks of intensive, hands-on experience in a region where big stories are the norm. Paid internships usually run from mid-June to late August. Applicants must be actively working toward a college degree in the U.S. Graduates may be eligible if you’ve finished school within six months of the start of the internship.Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and access to a car in good working condition. Little training is offered, so previous internship experience is preferred.

  • National Geographic (Jan. 30)
    The National Geographic magazine will offer two photography internships during the summer or fall of 2010. One internship is automatically offered to the winner of the College Photographer of the Year contest administered by the University of Missouri, Columbia. For information go to www.cpoy.org. The other internship is awarded based on a portfolio.
    The purpose of the internship is experience and encouragement to those who aspire to be a photojournalist. Interns must be at least 21 years of age and U.S. citizens, or have appropriate student work documents. Both internships are for 14 weeks at a salary of $480 a week.

    To apply, send a single package that includes a portfolio of recent work (no more than 30 images), a resume, and a letter of recommendation from a photography teacher or established photojournalist. CDs or DVDs are the preferred method of submission but portfolios may also be in the form of slides, prints or clippings of any combination, in color and/or black and white. Digital images should be JPEGs, sized to approximately 1600 wide, 72 dpi.

    National Geographic will accept portfolios in early January and all must be postmarked by Jan. 30, 2010. Send to Susan Smith, Deputy Director of Photography, National Geographic Magazine, 1145 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Label your envelope, “NGM Photography Internship.”

  • Burns Entertainment and Sports Marketing
    Burns Entertainment and Sports Marketing, Inc., Chicago, seeks a sales intern for the spring semester. The position is full-time from mid-January through mid-May. Applicants should have a love of entertainment and/or sports. Burns works with the nations largest public relations and advertising agencies, associations, not-for-profit groups, corporations and universities, helping them select and hire celebrities and athletes.   • Friday Zone
    Bridget Siebert, the new producer of The Friday Zone, a weekly children’s television series for WTIU/PBS on Indiana University’s Campus, is in search of The Friday Zone’s 2009-10 host. Journalism students are invited to audition. This position would give a student the television and on camera time that will build confidence and gain experience.   • National Student News Service
    The National Student News Service is accepting applications for several of its internships. The organization works to promote and produce news stories that focus on issues of student concern, explore the actions that students are taking on and off campus, and promote investigative journalism in the campus media. The NSNS produces a weekly news digest, provides ongoing trainings in critical journalism skills and work with student journalists across the country to build a national network of student newspapers.

    Interns monitor news outlets, write articles, conduct research projects and help build the organization through networking and outreach. To apply, send resume, cover letter, and a short writing sample (500 words or less) to: info@nsns.org.
  • Rachael’s Cafe
    Rachael’s Café, a Bloomington restaurant, has an opening for an intern to help with booking live events, event management and marketing/promotion.   • IU Radio-TV
    R-TV has many student opportunities, including volunteering, internships and part-time paid positions with training provided. Positions may report to WTIU (public television), Radio-TV Services (production and administration) or WFIU (public radio). The Radio-TV building is located on the west side of the Wells Library parking lot, directly north of the Fine Arts Building.     The IU Office of University Communications seeks interns to help with copy needs. One intern would write about the arts on the Bloomington campus and the other IU campuses.   • Huffington Post
    The Washington, D.C., HuffingtonPost.com has an immediate opening for a reporting/editorial intern. Interns will be asked to do extensive researching, writing, editing, fact-checking, monitoring of news stories and other tasks as assigned.   • Indiana Public Broadcasting
    Indiana Public Broadcasting is looking for freelancers to produce stories for the upcoming legislative session.

    What: On-call stringers and freelancers to report, produce and edit radio news spots for Indiana Public Broadcasting, to be distributed across eight Indiana public radio stations, including WFIU in Bloomington and WFYI in Indianapolis.

    When: On-call through 2010 legislative session Pay: $50 per spot

    Background: Preferred audio editing/radio background, but will train if necessary. Solid reporting skills are the driving factor in selection. Students are welcomed and encouraged.
