Gallery One: The Eastern Front

Ernie Pyle began his career as a war correspondent just days after the African invasion began. Here, Pyle has just arrived in Oran, Africa with troops reinforcing the invading armies. In late 1942, Pyle stayed in Oran covering the backwash of the invasion before heading east to cover the front lines in Tunisia. It was in Tunisia that Pyle began to write dispatches concerned with the details of daily soldier life. Those dispatches began to make him famous.
