Each summer, the School of Journalism offers a study abroad program in London. Students accepted for the program will spend two months in London, combining classroom learning with an internship at a London media organization.
Summer in London Program
- Students spend eight weeks in London, May 8 to July 3, 2010.
- Students spend three days a week at a supervised internship at a British media organization (one credit hour). Anglo American Educational Services will arrange the internships.
- Students will take a course in British/European media (three credit hours).
Eligibility
- Students in good standing in the journalism honors program (Ernie Pyle Scholars) are guaranteed a space for Summer in London 2010. They do not have to follow the application process.
- Hutton Honors students who are journalism majors and are finishing their sophomore years are eligible to apply.
- Journalism majors in their sophomore years with a minimum 3.3 GPA (overall) or a 3.7 GPA (major) will be considered on a competitive basis. (See Application section below for details.)
Housing
Apartment-style units are provided by Anglo American. These are two- or three-bedrooms flats with a common living area and kitchen. All School of Journalism students will live in the same building.
Costs
For the 2009 trip, the cost for the two-month program (excluding tuition) was $4,850, including round-trip transportation from Bloomington to London, an eight-week internship in British media and housing in a London apartment. Students should plan on an additional $1,000 for the purchase of groceries while in London, as well as any personal expenses.
Tuition fees for the program are based on Indiana University tuition rates. All students will be required to take a three-hour course and sign up for at least one hour in internship credit. (The internship credit can be taken in Fall 2010.) Accepted students will enroll in the School of Journalism’s summer school program.
Costs for 2010 are not yet available. Increases are expected in travel and housing.

Any student with an overall GPA of 3.3 or a major GPA of 3.7 is eligible to apply for funds from one of two programs below:Professional Experience Internship Grants

To Apply:
Ernie Pyle Scholars do not have to apply. For all others, the deadline for applications is in fall each year. All applications should include the following materials:
- Current resume, including media experience
- IU academic advising report or IU transcript
- Letter of recommendation from media supervisor (professional or student media)
- No more than three examples of media work, including published work, broadcast tapes, client documents or designs on hard copy, DVDs, CDs or URL links to online materials.
