Reporting HIV/AIDS in Africa, taught by professor Jim Kelly, is offered in Summer Session I and features travel to Eldoret and Nairobi, Kenya.

The four-credit-hour course is open to students with junior or senior standing who have completed J110 Foundations of Journalism and Mass Communication, J200 Reporting, Writing and Editing I and J210 Visual Communications, and to graduate students who have completed or been excused from J505 Intensive Reporting, Writing and Editing Workshop.

This course introduces students to the basic pathology of HIV/AIDS, with a specific emphasis on the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Students will also learn about the culture of East Africa and about the media system in Kenya.

While in Eldoret for three weeks, students will be assigned to teams with communication students from Moi University to report on health care topics in the area, with special attention on the various programs of IU-Kenya Partnership’s AMPATH project. Students complete three stories about health provision in Eldoret, which will be published on the School of Journalism’s Web page and marketed to media outlets for publication.

Students also will meet with African journalists and international correspondents in Nairobi to discuss health reporting.
