FAQs:

What are the advantages to living in the Media LLC?

Members of the Media LLC participate in a wide array of media-themed activities, such as access to guest speakers, discussion sessions and more, including:
  • Excursions to local media outlets (The Herald-Times, WTIU, WFIU and others);
  • Dinners with School of Journalism professors;
  • Discussions on hot topics, with moderators and special guests;
  • Access to the School of Journalism’s guest speakers, including attending the Speaker Series events that bring nationally-known media figures, such as Bob Woodward and Lisa Ling, to campus every semester
  • Movie nights with special themes;
  • Weekend trip;
  • Living in the same building that houses IU Student Television (IUSTV); is near local eateries such as Mother Bear’s Pizza, The Copper Cup, City Bakery and Dragon Express; is near T.I.S. Bookstore and Village Pantry; and is only a short walk to the Wells Library, HPER workout facilities, Indiana Memorial Union and the School of Journalism.

What are the requirements to be in the Media LLC?

While students do not have to declare a particular major to be in the Media LLC, all must apply for and be accepted to the Media LLC. Applications are available in the spring when students select housing options.

Members must take the J160 The Media Village course. This two-credit, eight-week course is taught in the fall by the dean of the School of Journalism, Brad Hamm. Students will hear from current journalism students, attend special media events and learn how to make the most of the opportunities available to them at IU.

A $100 fee for all members of the Media LLC covers some of the costs of events and trips.

Are there opportunities to produce media?

IUSTV is located in the Curry Wing of Read, so Media LLC residents won’t even have to leave the dorm to take part in student media. IUSTV offers both behind-the-camera and on-camera opportunities as well as spots in marketing and advertising. IUSTV is broadcast on campus television and on local cable access television (CATS).

The school also encourages students to get involved with the Indiana Daily Student (newspaper, magazine and Web), the Arbutus (yearbook) and WIUX student radio. Additionally, residents of the Media LLC will have the opportunity to create their own community-centered publications, such as newsletters, e-letters, Web sites, magazines or TV shows.

How do I sign up?

When you are admitted to IU, you will receive a packet of information on housing options. Look for the section on Living Learning Centers and mark the Media Living Learning Center as your first preference. Be sure to submit your housing application as soon as possible as the Media LLC is a popular place to live and spaces will fill up quickly. Check out the Residential Programs and Services Web site for details.
