Biography
Jessica Birthisel started the School of Journalism doctoral program in the fall of 2008. Her research interests include gender and sexuality in the media, especially as it pertains to children. Her teaching interests include media and culture, visual communication, and new media technologies.She started her first newspaper in fourth grade (circulation: 3 people) and has loved journalism ever since, working as a writer, editor, and designer at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. She earned a BA in journalism and graphic journalism from Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, and an MA in mass communication with concentrations in feminist media studies and politics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
