Biography

Dennis D. Elliott, an alumnus of I.U., teaches principles of public relations, public relations writing and the media as social institutions in the School of Journalism, and has a particular research interest in media ethics and bias. Dennis joined the faculty as the Riley Visiting Professor in the fall of 2007.
Dennis began his professional career in public relations with Mead Johnson & Company in 1969 and was immediately thrust into corporate business communications following a merger with the Bristol-Myers Company. Over the course of a 22-year career there he worked in positions in pharmaceutical advertising and marketing, and was responsible for pharmaceutical market conditioning programs on both the domestic and international fronts. These programs incorporated preparation of scientific manuscripts, physician medical education programs and related public relations activities.
At the point he left Bristol-Myers he was director of advertising with responsibility for the five pharmaceutical divisions and the nutritional division of the corporation.
During his business career Dennis served in significant roles of responsibility that contributed to the successful launch of significant pharmaceutical products in therapeutic areas such as oncology, cardiovascular disease and central nervous system disorders. He has led two physician continuing medical education companies, including oversight of the accreditation of these organizations by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education.
In addition to campaign development using a variety of media components, his experience also includes producing/directing video production programs and domestic and international satellite broadcasting events.
Prior to returning to I.U. Dennis was employed as a senior strategist for a multi-division organization headquartered in New York City. Dennis received his B.A. in journalism from I.U. in 1969 and has initiated a graduate study program. He also serves as a member of the School of Journalism Alumni Board and represents the School in the University’s Matching the Promise campaign.
