The School of Journalism administers many scholarships for undergraduates currently enrolled in the program. Scholarship applications will be available in late 2007 and deadlines are in January 2008. 

Scholarships, 2007-08:

Jan and Paul Abramowitz Scholarship - IUB

Arts or Science Writing, or Writing/Reporting/Editing

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a second concentration in fine arts, chemistry or biology; and intends to pursue a career in visual arts, arts reporting or science writing.

 

David L. Adams Scholarship - IUB

Indiana Daily Student, Arbutus, or Education

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is working on student publications, has a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0, has demonstrated financial need, and has an interest in teaching journalism at the high school level. 

David E. and Ruth (Padget) Albright Writing Scholarship - IUB

Writing/Reporting/Editing

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in writing professionally.

Donald Austin Scholarship - IUB

Robin (Fogel) Avni Scholarship for Design - IUB

Graphic Design, or Other

Preference is given students who have demonstrated, through a portfolio or a comparable collection of work, achievement in, and potential for, designing print or electronic publications, with a special emphasis in online design. Recipients should be in good academic standing.

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who combines proficiency in the classroom with journalistic accomplishments on the Indiana Daily Student.

Sarah Bence Scholarship - IUB

Need-based Scholarships, or Women Students

Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major and is based on need and journalistic ability.

Joseph A. Berman Scholarship - IUB

Students with Disabilities, Writing/Reporting/Editing, or Other

The award recognizes the achievement of an undergraduate journalism major with a disability or who is interested in writing about disability issues. The recipient should demonstrate a commitment to ethics of the profession, have the courage and inner strength to pursue his/her goals and have a reasonable academic record.

Joseph A. Berman Scholarship - IUB

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is pursing photojournalism. Photojournalism alumni and School of Journalism faculty select the scholarship recipient on the basis of photographic entries.

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is an Indiana resident and who has a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to a student who shows a flair for creative writing and plans to write professionally.

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is from The Journal Gazette circulation area and has an interest in print journalism.

Timothy A. Franklin Scholarship - IUB

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has proven ability in print media by working on the Indiana Daily Student and has a record of academic excellence.

Lola Graham/Theta Sigma Phi Scholarship - IUB

Geographic Requirements, or Women Students

Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major who is a resident of Monroe County, Ind.

Richard Gray Scholarship - IUB

Academics, or Arts or Science Writing

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major whose academic program reflects a broad range of interests in both the arts and sciences; whose academic achievement is clearly outstanding; whose professional promise is exceptional; and whose creativity and imagination have been recognized by peers.

Steve Guback Scholarship - IUB

Sports Writing, or Writing/Reporting/Editing

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who plans to pursue a career in print sports journalism.

Charles F. Hardy Memorial Scholarship - IUB

Geographic Requirements

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major on the Bloomington campus who is an American-born U.S. citizen.

Ross Hazeltine Travel Scholarship - IUB

International, Internships, or Post Graduate Study/Work

The scholarship is for a graduating senior from the Bloomington campus for travel or study outside the territorial limits of the United States, Canada or Mexico. Upon completion of the work/study abroad, the recipient is required to complete an article describing his or her experience for the School’s alumni publication.

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a record of accomplishment and leadership on the Indiana Daily Student during a minimum of three semesters. The recipient should be committed to a professional career in newspapers and be in good academic standing.

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is studying arts journalism.

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a specific interest in government or political science. Scholarship, need, journalistic potential and participation in government activities are considered.

Palladium-Item Scholarship - IUB

Geographic Requirements

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major from Wayne, Randolph, Fayette, Franklin or Union counties in Indiana; or Preble or Darke counties in Ohio.

Poynter Scholarship and Internship - IUB

Internships

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has completed his/her junior year and is dedicated to news-editorial journalism. The recipient of the scholarship is offered a summer internship with the St. Petersburg Times.

Public Relations Achievement Scholarship - IUB

Public Relations

Preference is given to a junior who has demonstrated academic achievement in public relations course work, has a strong interest in public relations activities outside of the classroom setting, and shows exceptional promise as a public relations professional

Preference given to undergraduate journalism majors who are Indiana residents.

Scripps Howard Internship - IUB

Internships

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major for summer internship support for students who have accepted an unpaid internship. The recipient must be in an approved, full-time, internship in a professional work environment for ten to twelve weeks. The internship should provide meaningful work experience to complement the student’s academic program.

Preference is for an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in a career in reporting the performing arts, fine arts or decorative arts or who has a second concentration in music. Academics are not primary criteria for the scholarship; rather, emphasis is placed on a recipient who has a keen curiosity and interest in these subjects.

Geographic Requirements

Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is from Hamilton Township, Delaware County, Ind., or is an Indiana resident.

Dick Yoakam Broadcast Journalism Scholarship - IUB

Broadcast

Preference is given to undergraduate journalism majors who are studying broadcast journalism, and is awarded on the basis of academic record, professional potential and financial need.
