Current Students: Scholarships

The School of Journalism administers many scholarships for undergraduates currently enrolled in the program.

Deadlines are mid-January. 


Scholarships, 2009-10:

Jan and Paul Abramowitz Scholarship – IUB

  • Arts or science writing, or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a second concentration in fine arts, chemistry or biology; and intends to pursue a career in visual arts, arts reporting or science writing.

David L. Adams Scholarship – IUB

  • Indiana Daily Student, Arbutus or education
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is working on student publications, has a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0, has demonstrated financial need, and has an interest in teaching journalism at the high school level. 

David E. and Ruth (Padget) Albright Writing Scholarship – IUB

  • Writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in writing professionally.

Donald Austin Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major

Robin (Fogel) Avni Scholarship for Design – IUB

  • Graphic design or other
  • Preference is given students who have demonstrated, through a portfolio or a comparable collection of work, achievement in, and potential for, designing print or electronic publications, with a special emphasis in online design. Recipients should be in good academic standing.

Jack Backer Scholarship – IUB

  • Indiana Daily Student
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who combines proficiency in the classroom with journalistic accomplishments on the Indiana Daily Student.

Sarah Bence Scholarship – IUB

  • Need-based scholarships or women students
  • Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major and is based on need and journalistic ability.

Joseph A. Berman Scholarship – IUB

  • Students with disabilities, writing/reporting/editing or other.
  • The award recognizes the achievement of an undergraduate journalism major with a disability or who is interested in writing about disability issues. The recipient should demonstrate a commitment to ethics of the profession, have the courage and inner strength to pursue his/her goals and have a reasonable academic record.

Marjorie (Smith) Blewett Internship – IUB

  • Internships
  • Summer internship support for an undergraduate journalism major.

Philip Ward Burton Advertising Scholarship – IUB

  • Advertising
  • Preference is for an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in a career in advertising.

Ruth (Squibb) Chapman Journalism Scholarship – IUB

  • Academics
  • Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major with a strong academic record.

Copley Newspapers Scholarship – IUB

  • Indiana Daily Student
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major with a demonstrated interest in newspaper reporting. Financial need and academic potential also are considered.

Robert R. and Mary (Pence) Cosner Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major

Counts/Ahlhauser Scholarship – IUB

  • Photojournalism
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is pursing photojournalism. Photojournalism alumni and School of Journalism faculty select the scholarship recipient on the basis of photographic entries.

Lewis B. Edwards Journalism Scholarship – IUB

  • Need-based scholarships or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has demonstrated financial need and shows professional promise with an emphasis on reporting/editing in print journalism.

Mark Ferree and Ruth (Welborn) Ferree Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major

Jack and Helen Fesko Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements, writing/reporting/editing or academics
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is an Indiana resident and who has a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to a student who shows a flair for creative writing and plans to write professionally.

Fort Wayne Journal Gazette Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is from The Journal Gazette circulation area and has an interest in print journalism.

Timothy A. Franklin Scholarship – IUB

  • Indiana Daily Student
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has proven ability in print media by working on the Indiana Daily Student and has a record of academic excellence.

Lola Graham/Theta Sigma Phi Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements or women students
  • Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major who is a resident of Monroe County, Ind.

Richard Gray Scholarship – IUB

  • Academics, arts or science writing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major whose academic program reflects a broad range of interests in both the arts and sciences; whose academic achievement is clearly outstanding; whose professional promise is exceptional; and whose creativity and imagination have been recognized by peers.

Steve Guback Scholarship – IUB

  • Sports writing or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who plans to pursue a career in print sports journalism.

Charles F. Hardy Memorial Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major on the Bloomington campus who is an American-born U.S. citizen.

Ross Hazeltine Travel Scholarship – IUB

  • International, internships or post-graduate study/work
  • The scholarship is for a graduating senior from the Bloomington campus for travel or study outside the territorial limits of the United States, Canada or Mexico. Upon completion of the work/study abroad, the recipient is required to complete an article describing his or her experience for the School’s alumni publication.
  • Application form is only available during the fall semester of each year.

William Randolph Hearst Foundation Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major.

James and Susan (Bassett) Hetherington Scholarship – IUPUI

  • Undergraduate journalism major.

Ralph L. Holsinger Scholarship – IUB

  • Academics
  • Preference is given to a student who has a record of academic excellence and shows great promise in the professions. Consideration shall be given to students with an interest in pursuing a career in print journalism but should not be limited to this field.

Roy W. Howard Scholarship – IUB

  • Preference is given to sons and daughters of employees of Scripps Howard Newspapers.

John Matthew Jackson Memorial Scholarship – IUB

  • Indiana Daily Student
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a record of accomplishment and leadership on the Indiana Daily Student during a minimum of three semesters. The recipient should be committed to a professional career in newspapers and be in good academic standing.

  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is studying arts journalism.

Journalism Alumni Scholarship – IUB/IUPUI

Gretchen A. Kemp Scholarship – IUB

  • Education
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in teaching high school journalism.
  • Application form is available only during the fall semester of each year.

Margaret H. Knote Journalism Scholarship – IUB

  • Advertising
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in creative advertising copy writing.

M. William Lutholtz Memorial Scholarship – IUPUI

Linda (Nichols) Mayes Memorial Scholarship – IUB

  • Arbutus
  • Preference is given to an Arbutus staff member who has demonstrated academic achievement and financial need.

Patrick J. McKeand Sagamore Scholarship – IUPUI

  • The Scholarship shall be made available to the editor(s)-in-chief of the Sagamore.

John F. McLeod Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major.

Louise (Hess) Miller Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements
  • Preference is given to undergraduate journalism majors from the South Bend, Ind., area.

O’Bannon Journalism Scholarship – IUB

  • Government/political writing or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a specific interest in government or political science. Scholarship, need, journalistic potential and participation in government activities are considered.

Palladium-Item Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major from Wayne, Randolph, Fayette, Franklin or Union counties in Indiana; or Preble or Darke counties in Ohio.

Poynter Scholarship and Internship – IUB

  • Internships
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has completed his/her junior year and is dedicated to news-editorial journalism. The recipient of the scholarship is offered a summer internship with the St. Petersburg Times.

Public Relations Achievement Scholarship – IUB

  • Public relations
  • Preference is given to a junior who has demonstrated academic achievement in public relations course work, has a strong interest in public relations activities outside of the classroom setting, and shows exceptional promise as a public relations professional.

Eugene C. Pulliam Scholarship – IUB/IUPUI

  • Unrestricted – IUB and IUPUI
  • Undergraduate journalism major

Ernie Pyle Scholarship – IUB

  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who served or is serving in the Armed Forces. These scholarships are for a student with potential, financial need and a reasonable academic record.

Chris Savage Memorial Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major

Jack Scott Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements
  • Preference given to undergraduate journalism majors who are Indiana residents.

Scripps Howard Internship – IUB

  • Internships
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major for summer internship support for students who have accepted an unpaid internship. The recipient must be in an approved, full-time, internship in a professional work environment for ten to twelve weeks. The internship should provide meaningful work experience to complement the student’s academic program.

Patrick Siddons Indiana Daily Student Scholarship – IUB

  • Indiana Daily Student
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who works on the Indiana Daily Student staff and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Patricia Beach Smith Scholarship – IUB

  • Arts or science writing, or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is for an undergraduate journalism major who is interested in a career in reporting the performing arts, fine arts or decorative arts or who has a second concentration in music. Academics are not primary criteria for the scholarship; rather, emphasis is placed on a recipient who has a keen curiosity and interest in these subjects.

Steve and Becky (Gunden) Smith Scholarship – IUB

  • Education
  • Preference is for an undergraduate journalism major who has worked in the profession of journalism as an educator, or who plans to pursue this as a career.

Aileen Snoddy Scholarship – IUB/IUPUI

  • Women students or need-based scholarships
  • Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major and is based on financial need.

John E. and Mary Stempel Memorial Scholarship – IUB

  • Undergraduate journalism major

  • Preference is for an undergraduate journalism major who intends to pursue a career in electronic journalism.

Charles and Nancy Teeple Business Writing Scholarship – IUB

  • Business writing or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a demonstrated interest in business writing/editing or has a strong desire to pursue a career in business writing/editing.

Charles and Nancy Teeple Soccer Writing Scholarship – IUB/IUPUI

  • Sports Writing or writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who has a demonstrated interest in soccer writing.

Carolyn (Lucas) Tufford Journalism Scholarship – IUB

  • Writing/reporting/editing
  • Preference is given to a female undergraduate journalism major who is aspiring to be a news journalist, preferably in the written word.

John Johnson Wheeler Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements or need-based scholarships
  • Preference is given to junior who is an Indiana resident and has demonstrated financial need and journalistic potential.

G. Cleveland Wilhoit – IUB

  • Academics or post-graduate study/work
  • Preference is given to a junior who has demonstrated academic acheivement and intends to pursue post-graduate study.

Robert Williamson Memorial Scholarship – IUB

  • Geographic requirements
  • Preference is given to an undergraduate journalism major who is from Hamilton Township, Delaware County, Ind., or is an Indiana resident.

Dick Yoakam Broadcast Journalism Scholarship – IUB

  • Broadcast
  • Preference is given to undergraduate journalism majors who are studying broadcast journalism, and is awarded on the basis of academic record, professional potential and financial need.
