Aquila presents research at Feb. 20 colloquium

Doctoral student Valerie Aquila will present “Smithsonian 9/11 Conversations: The role of engaged visitors in the creation of individual-level audience frames," at 4 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Ernie Pyle Hall lounge. Her talk is part of the school's Research Colloquium series.

Aquila’s study focuses on how groups within a specific online community maintained by the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of American History reflected on the ways that 9/11 had affected them, and their roles in memories of the event.

She studied 70 people in five groups engaged in a public discussion about 9/11 over the course of two weeks in fall 2011. The conversations yielded many recollections, ideologies and attitudes about 9/11, but only two frames emerged from the data: 9/11 as a current event and 9/11 as a pivotal moment in U.S. history. In her work, Aquila analyzes two frames, which she will use in follow-up studies to identify whether individual frames are present in media surrounding memorials of tragic events that affect communities.

Assistant professor Hans Ibold will talk on "Dissent at a Distance" with telecommunications doctoral student Lindsay Ems at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at Radio-TV 180.

The talk is part of telecom's Media Arts and Sciences Speaker Series. Ibold and Ems will talk about their work with telecom professor Mark Deuze on a book chapter about Twitter and social change.

Assistant professor Jae Kook Lee is author of two works currently awaiting publication.

First is “The public agenda along the life span: Testing the life-cycle effect of age on the agenda-setting process,” which will appear in Agenda Setting in a 2.0 World: New agendas in communication, edited by T. Johnson and to be published by Routledge.

“Perceptions of cable news credibility,” written with co-author Natalie Jomini Stroud, is set to appear in an upcoming issue of Mass Communication & Society.

Wagner paper accepted for joint conference

Doctoral student A. Jay Wagner’s paper, "The History of Rights Prohibited to Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement,” has been accepted for presentation at the Joint Journalism and Communications History Conference March 10 at John Jay College in New York City.

The paper traces the use of free speech restrictions on the University of California Berkeley's campus during the Free Speech Movement in the early 1960s, with a particular focus on the group's reluctant leader, Mario Savio.

The conference is organized by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, History Division, and the American Journalism Historians Association.

Parameswaran receives collaborative research funding

Professor Radhika Parameswaran is one of 21 IU faculty members to receive a Collaborative Research and Creative Activity Funding award from the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.

The award is designed to foster collaborations and jump-start projects that involve IU Bloomington faculty and IU centers, institutes and museums.

Parameswaran’s project, with John Bodnar of the Center for the Study of History and Memory, is “Covering the New India: Media portraits of a nation in transition.”

Each award provides up to $10,000 over a one-year period for work done in collaboration with a campus center, institute or museum.

Kelly wins Lieber award for teaching

Associate professor Jim Kelly is the recipient of this year's Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Distinguished Teaching Award for Indiana University.

This award is given to a faculty member from any of the eight campuses. IU President Michael McRobbie will honor Kelly and other outstanding faculty and students during the IU Honors Convocation and Founders Day activities in April.

The committee on university distinguished teaching awards was unanimous in its selection of Kelly for the award. His name will be added to a plaque on display in the Indiana Memorial Union. Previous winners of IU distinguished teaching awards from the School of Journalism include associate professor Dave Boeyink, professor Claude Cookman, associate dean and professor Michael Evans and the late journalism lecturer Beth Wood.

Ireri next colloquium speaker

Doctoral student Kioko Ireri will present “Kenya Journalists: A study of demographics, job satisfaction, news values and perceived autonomy” at 4 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Ernie Pyle Hall lounge.

Ireri surveyed 96 Kenyan journalists to understand their demographic backgrounds, job satisfaction, working conditions and the use of technology. Their perceptions on journalistic ethics, journalistic freedoms and forces which influence their work also were explored.

Results show that 69.7 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with their jobs, with income the main predictor of job satisfaction.
More male journalists were satisfied with their jobs than their female counterparts.
While newsroom gatekeepers were found instrumental in deciding news content, media owners followed by advertisers were perceived as the main threats to journalistic freedoms.
Almost half of Kenyan journalists work in print media, and slightly over three quarters work in privately-owned media organizations.
A majority of respondents said corruption was deeply entrenched in the Kenyan journalism.
Ninety-six percent of respondents had formal training in journalism.

His talk is part of the school's Research Colloquium, a series that provides a venue for researchers to present their work and receive feedback from colleagues. Presentations are open to all.

Coleman attends Abe Fellowship retreat

Visiting professor Joe Coleman attended the Abe Fellowship's annual retreat in Amelia Island, Fla., Jan. 13-16.

He chaired a panel discussion on the Occupy Wall Street movement and advised this year's winners of the Abe Fellowship for Journalists, which is sponsored by The Japan Foundation's Center for Global Partnership.

Coleman was an Abe Fellow in 2010.

Parameswaran to present research at Texas A&M colloquium

Professor Radhika Parameswaran has accepted an invitation to present her research at a joint research colloquium of the Department of Communication and the Women's Studies program at Texas A&M University, College Station, on April 12 and 13. She will also visit a graduate seminar in the Department of Communication and meet with faculty and students from both units.
