Her talk is part of the school's Research Colloquium series.

Aquila’s study focuses on how groups within a specific online community maintained by the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of American History reflected on the ways that 9/11 had affected them, and their roles in memories of the event.

She studied 70 people in five groups engaged in a public discussion about 9/11 over the course of two weeks in fall 2011. The conversations yielded many recollections, ideologies and attitudes about 9/11, but only two frames emerged from the data: 9/11 as a current event and 9/11 as a pivotal moment in U.S. history. In her work, Aquila analyzes two frames, which she will use in follow-up studies to identify whether individual frames are present in media surrounding memorials of tragic events that affect communities.

Related

Ibold guest of Kling Center Speaker Series (Feb. 9)

Ibold to talk on 'Dissent at Distance' (Feb. 9)

Lee's two works set for publication (Feb. 7)
