Routledge publishes The Global Journalist

A new book edited by Professor Emeritus David Weaver and professor Lars Willnat, The Global Journalist in the 21st Century, has just been published by Routledge Press. This 585-page book includes studies of journalists in more than 30 countries in 38 chapters written by 80 authors. It's a follow-up to the 1998 Global Journalist book edited by Weaver that included studies of journalists from 21 countries.

Each August, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference invites researchers and scholars from all over the world to share their work. IU School of Journalism faculty and students often present their work or serve on panels.

Below, find an evolving list of those who will participate at the next AEJMC conference in Chicago in Aug. 9-12.

Professor Radhika Parameswaran is organizer and presenter on the research panel "Women in the Media Industries: Global Perspectives," which is co-sponsored by the International Communication and Commission on the Status of Women Divisions. She will participate in the annual meeting of AEJMC's publications committee as an official member of this committee, and she will serve as a discussant for a refereed research paper session in the Commission on the Status of Women Division.
Assistant professor Lesa Hatley Major is lead author of “Beyond Getting Your Bell Rung: Framing of Sport-Related Concussion Coverage Between 2007 and 2012,” which has been accepted for presentation by the Sports Communication Interest Group and has been honored with the Top Faculty Paper Award. Her co-authors are HPER doctoral students Matthew Zimmerman and Lauren Burch.
Mohammed Al-Azdee, PhD’12, is the author of "Survey Data Analysis with Continuous Moderator Variables in Multiple Regression Modeling," which has been accepted by the Communication Theory and Methodology Division for either a presentation or a poster at this summer’s annual AEJMC conference in Chicago. Only 45 out of 95 papers were accepted by the division.
Doctoral student Jihyang Choi is the author of "Who (or what) sets J-bloggers’ agenda? A comparison between the political J-blogs of newspapers and television networks,” which has been accepted by the Communication Theory and Methodology Division.
Doctoral student Claudia Kozman’s paper, “The Tiger Woods Scandal in the Media: Measuring Attribute Effects on the Public,” has been accepted for presentation as part of the Scholar-to-Scholar Poster Session Aug. 11.

Metzgar work diplomacy research in journal

Assistant professor Emily Metzgar’s public diplomacy research that focuses on the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program has been published in CPD Perspectives on Public Diplomacy, a publication of the University of Southern California's Center on Public Diplomacy.

"Promoting Japan: One JET at a Time" features original survey data gathered in 2011 from over 500 American JET alumni and considers how the government-sponsored exchange program fits into the shifting constructions of public diplomacy.

Weaver lectures at Texas Tech, Vienna

Professor Emeritus David Weaver lectured about agenda-setting and global journalism research at Texas Tech University in Lubbock April 9 – 11. Former doctoral student Yunjuan (Lily) Luo is on the faculty of mass communication there.

Weaver is also teaching at four-week class on global journalism research at the University of Vienna, Austria, during the month of May.

Assistant professors Hans Ibold and Emily Metzgar’s study of the politically-oriented tweets is featured in a recent post by the Nieman Journalism Lab.

The research looks at the extent to which Twitter users behave like journalists, even if they aren’t journalists in the traditional professional sense. Ibold and Metzgar are tracking tweets about politics and examining how these tweets use information.

Parameswaran edited volume set for fall publication

Professor Radhika Parameswaran's edited volume, Audience and Interpretation, one of eight volumes in the book series, International Encyclopedias of Media Studies, is forthcoming from Wiley-Blackwell in fall 2012.

In addition to the editor's original introduction chapter (40 pages), which reviews the status and direction of global audience studies, this volume contains 25 originally commissioned chapters (between 8,000 to 1,000 words) authored by leading and emerging scholars from Australia, Denmark, Spain, U.K, Singapore, India, China and the United States.

Parameswaran said IU journalism doctoral students Sangwon Park and Jihyang Choi provided "outstanding" research assistance for this project.

School of Journalism Ph.D. alumni Kim Trager-Bohley, Deborah Chung and Jennifer Rauch also have authored chapters in this book.

IU students, faculty, alumni win Indy SPJ awards

IU senior Danielle Paquette was named co-Indiana Student Journalist of the Year and several other IU students, faculty and alumni earned honors from the Indiana Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual banquet Friday in Indianapolis.

While Paquette and Ball State University student Alberto Pimienta shared the annual top student honors, alumna Kara Kenney, BAJ’01, was sole winner of Indiana Journalist of the Year honors for her work at WRTV-6 in Indianapolis.

Chad Carrothers, BAJ’99, won the Slaymaker Service to Indiana Journalism award for his work at WFHB community radio in Bloomington, one of many honors for the nonprofit radio station.

IU Student Media and the journalism class that produces 812 The Magazine won awards in the student division. In the pro categories, area news organizations reflected IU talent, too. Winners WFHB community radio, WFIU and WTIU’s Indiana Public Media, Bloom magazine and the Herald-Times have among their staffs many journalism alumni and student interns.

Here are IU-related awards:

Students in 812 The Magazine swept the college publication feature category. Lisa Tomcko won first for “Harp and Soul,” Meredith Reffner won second for “The Prawn Broker,” and Taylor Smith and Zach Hetrick won third for “The Giving Trees.”

Also, Helene DeLone, Zach Hetrick, Rebecca S. Dille, Danielle Rindler and Matt Callahan won a second place for cover design, and Dille, DeLone and Callahan won third place for non-cover design for the magazine, which is the product of J360 Creating an Indiana Magazine, taught by lecturer Nancy Comiskey.

Claire Ronner won first for lifestyle feature, college publication, for “The morel mystique.” Danielle Rindler and Chaz Mottinger won first for arts feature, college publication, for “Made in Southern Indiana.”

The staff of the Indiana Daily Student won first for college website, idsnews.com, and second for series, college publication, for “9/11: Looking back, looking forward.” The staff also won first for page one cover design.

Also for the IDS, Mark Felix won second for news photograph, college publication, for “Occupy protests,” and Sarah Hutchins, BAJ’11, won first for in-depth reporting, college publication, for “Sexual assault in Bloomington: Fighting back.”

In the professional category, Professor Emeritus Peter Jacobi won third in arts feature for “Cleveland Orchestra Residency” in the (Bloomington, Ind.) Herald-Times. Lecturer Nancy Comiskey and CJ Lotz, BAJ’11, won first place, lifestyle feature, special interest magazine/periodical, for “Hidden Brown County,” Indianapolis Monthly.

School Web editor and adjunct lecturer Gena Asher won second place, best feature in a special interest magazine/periodical, for “Treasures of the Lilly,” IU Alumni magazine. Adjunct lecturer Jeremy Shere won first place, coverage of the environment, for “To make Bloomington more sustainable: The men and women at the forefront,” Bloom magazine.

Some students worked on projects that aired on WFHB and won awards in the professional category. A.D. Quig was part of a team that won third place in radio documentary for “Indiana Healthcare in Turmoil.” Student Andrew Olanoff and alumnus Chad Carrothers won first place for social justice reporting, radio, for “Shelter from the Storm: Homeless in Winter.”

Other alumni who won for their various publications include Alycin Bektesh, MA’10; Barbara Berggoetz, BA’73, MA’79; Daniel Comiskey, MA’05; January Jones, MA’10; Mike Malik, BA’06; Kathleen Quilligan, BAJ’06; Penny Reid, BA’87; Carrie Ritchie, BAJ’08; and Amy Wimmer Schwarb, BAJ’98.

Raymer judges NPPA contest

Professor Steve Raymer was a recent judge for the Best of Photojournalism 2012 contest sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association.

Raymer judged the "picture editing" categories for magazines, newspapers, and websites. Entrants in the contest, which was judged at Ohio University in Athens, ranged from Sports Illustrated and The News York Times to National Public Radio and the Dubois County Herald in Jasper, Ind.

Coleman’s Abe Fellowship to support book research

Professor of Practice Joseph Coleman has won an Abe Fellowship to conduct research for his forthcoming book, The Old Man and the Hammer: The Struggle to Build the Aging Workforce of the Future.

The fellowship is administered by the Social Science Research Council and the American Council of Learned Societies, and is funded by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. The fellowship will fund research in France, Japan and the United States over the next 18 months.

Coleman was a 2009 recipient of the Abe Journalism Fellowship.

Journal accepts Jaesik Ha article

Doctoral candidate Jaesik Ha's article, "Press Independence in the Guantanamo Controversy: The NYT's coverage during the Bush and Obama administration," has been accepted by publication in Newspaper Research Journal.

This paper won the MacDougall Student Paper Competition (Top Student Paper) in the newspaper division of 2011 AEJMC annual conference. It was developed in Professor Emeritus David Weaver's J500 Introduction to Mass Media Research in the fall 2009.
