She&#39;ll intern at the Courier-Journal in Louisville.</span></td>		</tr>	</tbody></table>Keiara Carr, BAJ&rsquo;12, is one of 23 students and young journalists from diverse backgrounds have been named <a href="http://freedomforumdiversity.org" title="Chips Quinn Scholars" tabindex="2" target="_new">Chips Quinn Scholars</a> for summer 2012 by the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute and participating news organizations.<br><br>Carr just finished orientation for the program in Nashville, Tenn. Scholars train with veteran journalists before heading off to 12-week internships or to full-time jobs at one of 21 newsrooms around the country. Carr will work at the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky.<br><br>This is the 21st year for the program, named in honor of John C. &quot;Chips&quot; Quinn Jr., who was managing editor of the Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) She is the winner of an IBA scholarship.</span></td>		</tr>		<tr>			<td>&nbsp;</td>		</tr>	</tbody></table>Senior Deanna Allbrittin is one of 10 Indiana college students to win an <a href="http://www.indianabroadcasters.org/" title="Indiana Broadcasters Association" tabindex="2" target="_new">Indiana Broadcasters Association</a> Scholarship worth $2,700.<br><br>An Ernie Pyle Scholar, Allbrittin is interested in pursuing a broadcast career and already has been involved with IUSTV, IU&rsquo;s student-run TV station, and other broadcast activities. She has a fellowship at CBS in New York this summer, where she&#39;ll work for 10 weeks as an intern.<br><br>The Indiana Broadcasters awarded a total of $30,000 in scholarships to 16 students selected from nearly 150 applications. She enlisted professors, including Steve Raymer and Jim Kelly, colleagues and professionals to help her put together a portfolio.<br><br>&ldquo;Professor Raymer and Professor Kelly have both been absolutely instrumental to my growth as a photojournalist,&rdquo; Corya said. &ldquo;Without their relentless support, encouragement and wisdom, I would never have realized my own potential. Anything I have achieved is because of them.&rdquo;<br><br>Corya received the award as a part of the larger awards ceremony for the best Indiana newspaper journalism of the year. She attended a luncheon and was given the Will Counts Photojournalism Award by Vivian Counts, widow of Will Counts.<br><br>&ldquo;Back when Will Counts taught here, IU&rsquo;s photojournalism program used to be one of the best in the country,&rdquo; Corya said of Counts, who was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for his <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/news/50th-anniversary-renews-interest-in-counts-photo/" title="coverage of segregation in Arkansas in the 1950s" tabindex="2">coverage of segregation in Arkansas in the 1950s</a>. James Brosher, BAJ&rsquo;10, won in 2010.<br><br>She is a Zionsville native who said she realized that she wanted to be a photojournalist in a high school history class when she learned about Jacob Riss&rsquo; 1890 photo book documenting the housing conditions in New York City. His work spurred legislation to improve safety standards.<br><br>&ldquo;It was an &lsquo;aha&rsquo; moment when I realized I could simultaneously make a difference and do something I enjoy,&rdquo; Corya said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been hooked on photojournalism ever since.&rdquo;<br><br>She has worked at the Indiana Daily Student, as a photographer in Cape Coast, Ghana, and was a Pulliam Fellow at The Indianapolis Star. The four created an awareness campaign for Contiki Vacations to introduce the tour operator to college students. IU and Moi students teamed up to cover topics ranging from health care to nutrition to orphans.<br><br>&quot;She and Courtney Cronin got along famously right from the start&mdash;almost like sisters,&rdquo; associate professor <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=162" title="Jim Kelly" tabindex="2">Jim Kelly</a> recalled. &ldquo;They spent hours and hours together at the Tumaini Centre learning about the various programs for the street children and gaining their trust.<br><br>&ldquo;Before we left Eldoret, Courtney organized a clothing donation where IU journalism students donated six boxes of their clothing to the centre. The boys and girls there traded &#39;points&#39; earned by attending class and such to &#39;buy&#39; those clothes. It was an inspiring effort by two young journalists covering an inspiring program.&quot;<br><br>Once they were assigned as partners, Cronin and Kandie emailed before they when the students arrived in Kenya. Cronin wrote of Kandie&rsquo;s journalistic skills and her early departure from the program in <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/programs/kenya_2011/2011/05/27/reporting-from-displaced-persons-camp/" title="her blog." tabindex="2">her blog.</a><br><br>]]></content:encoded>

The Ph.D.s represent years of hard work, said Professor Emerita <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=166" title="Christine Ogan" tabindex="2">Christine Ogan</a>, who participated in the ceremony with Manaf Bashir, a student who began his doctoral studies as her advisee.</li>	<br>	<li>The school hosted a reception for all 2012 graduates May 4. Soon-to-be-graduates and their friends and family joined journalism dean <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=182" title="Brad Hamm" tabindex="2">Brad Hamm</a>, faculty and staff for a big send-off, which included hearing from Aisha Hasnie, BAJ&rsquo;06. A broadcaster at an Indianapolis TV station, Hasnie talked about how she took her journalism skills to the real world, and she encouraged students to pursue their careers with passion.</li>	<br>	<li>About 250 students will receive their bachelor&#39;s degrees in journalism in May and August. During afternoon undergraduate ceremonies May 5, journalism student Lauren Sedam addressed the afternoon audience as one of only two students invited to speak during commencement exercises. The other student addressed the morning commencement. Hamm begins his new role Sept. 1.<br><br>Hamm has served as dean of the IU School of Journalism since 2005 and is only the fifth leader of the program in its 100-year history. His last day at IU will be June 30. An interim dean will be named in the near future.<br><br>&quot;We are disappointed to lose a visionary educator and administrator of Brad&#39;s quality, but the highly ranked Medill School presents a wonderful opportunity and we are very happy for Brad personally,&quot; said IU President Michael A. McRobbie. &quot;The Internet is dramatically changing the face of journalism and the media around the world, and Brad has worked hard to steer IU&#39;s School of Journalism through a time of unprecedented change.<br><br>&quot;Under his leadership, the school broadened the scope of its mission, upgraded its curriculum and experienced a tremendous increase in alumni support, which has resulted in some of the largest gifts in the school&#39;s history. Here, he is with Keiara Carr, left, and scholarship donor Marge Blewett, BA&#39;48.</span></td>		</tr>	</tbody></table>The School of Journalism now sends nearly <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/news/study-more-than-half-of-journalism-studentstravel-abroad-highest-percentage-at-iu/" title="60 percent of its students abroad," tabindex="2">60 percent of its students abroad,</a> triple the rate prior to Hamm&rsquo;s arrival, with many traveling as part of unique travel courses that send students around the globe for study.<br><br>Also during Hamm&#39;s tenure, the School of Journalism created the <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/journalism-experiences/honors-program-ernie-pyle-scholars/" title="Ernie Pyle Scholars honors program" tabindex="2">Ernie Pyle Scholars honors program</a>. The school also created what has become a highly regarded <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/journalism-experiences/speakerseries/" title="annual lecture series" tabindex="2">annual lecture series</a> that regularly brings national leaders in journalism and communications to the IU Bloomington campus.<br><br>Hamm also was the driving force behind the development of the <a href="http://sportsjournalism.org" title="National Sports Journalism Center" tabindex="2">National Sports Journalism Center</a> on the campus of IUPUI, which was the first to offer a master&#39;s degree in sports journalism. During Hamm&#39;s tenure, the school won <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/notices/students-celebrate-hearst-achievements/" title="national championships" tabindex="2">national championships</a> in writing in 2010 and 2011 in the Hearst Journalism Awards and an <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/news/iu-students-take-first-second-in-hearst-contest/" title="IU student won the individual title" tabindex="2">IU student won the individual title</a> for the first time in school history in 2011. The only other Hearst national team championship for IU was in the 1960s.<br><br>&quot;Brad helped Indiana re-assert its place among America&#39;s elite journalism programs,&quot; said Paul Tash, BA&#39;76, chairman and CEO of the Times Publishing Co., which publishes Florida&#39;s largest newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times. &quot;With a creative energy, he drew upon the traditions of Hoosier journalism, while keeping a keen eye on the rapid changes shaping the media world. Brad made a big difference at Ernie Pyle Hall, and beyond. The school whose students accumulate the most points overall wins first, which went to Pennsylvania State this year. Last year, IU finished fourth overall.<br><br>To enter, students submit their best published work in each category, and the top five students in each win scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000. IU will receive a $10,000 grant as one of the top three overall winners in the writing competition.<br><br>This year, the writing contest drew 535 entries from college journalists.The individual students who earn the most points are invited to compete in the national finals in June, where they are assigned on-the-spot stories to report, write and submit in just a few hours. Last year, IU&rsquo;s Danielle Paquette won first prize, a first IU.<br><br>This summer, senior Biz Carson will take on the challenge. As a result of the final point standings, she qualified as a wild card and was chosen to compete in San Francisco June 4-8. Prizes include scholarship awards ranging from $1,500 to $5,000. She will compete with seven of the nation&#39;s top college student journalists.<br><br>In addition to the writing division, students around the nation also compete in two photojournalism competitions, three broadcast news competitions and four multimedia competitions, with championship finals in all divisions.
