Although he has a long list of works and accomplishments, he is most known for his work in agenda setting and the 1982, 1992 and 2002 American Journalist series of surveys. Later this year, the 2012 study, The Global Journalist in the 21st Century, will be published.

Last year, IU named Weaver “distinguished professor,” the only professor from the School of Journalism in the journalism school’s 100-year history to earn the title.

Weaver, though, downplayed these accomplishments as he addressed the audience Saturday.

“I think the title of Wells’s biography is Being Lucky,” he said. “And I can relate to that.”

Weaver also credited his mentor and American Journalists collaborator Professor Emeritus Cleve Wilhoit and his three “bosses” at the school, deans Richard Gray, Trevor Brown and Brad Hamm. He also acknowledged colleagues in the audience.

Other inductees or their families also made remarks, sometimes sharing personal stories or anecdotes.

Walt Tabak provided technical support to Associated Press members from 1961 to 1986, and many journalists remembered him as someone who was always there to fix problems no matter the time or the weather. His family remembered the same qualities.

“My dad’s commitment, dedication, pride to do the best job he could at one in the afternoon or one in the morning,” said his son, Ron Tabak, who accepted the award for his father.

Mark Ferree was a classmate of Ernie Pyle and Nelson Poynter at IU and the two helped him to land a job selling advertisement for the Washington Daily News in 1932, starting his long career as an executive with Scripps-Howard Newspapers.

His great-great nephew Kevin Harris accepted the award and said his uncle had a high view of journalism and loved to see young people join the profession and succeed.

Skip Hess spent 50 years with the two Indianapolis newspapers, writing investigative stories that brought down politicians and sparked government and institutional reform. He said his induction isn’t about one story, but about the thousands of stories, years of reporting, all the people he interviewed and the editors who helped him.

“It’s been a fun, 50-year ride,” he told the crowd, which included former colleagues, family and friends. “I can’t remember one day that I didn’t want to go to work.”

60 Minutes' Steve Kroft, a native of Kokomo, said he was honored to be part of the state's history.

Steve Kroft has been in the business nearly as long as Hess. The Kokomo native spent 40 years in broadcast journalism, and since 1989 has been at 60 Minutes. His work has earned five Peabodys, 10 Emmys and two Dupont awards.

Kroft said his Midwestern roots have taught him hard work, to be friendly and to have a healthy distrust of people in power.

With all of his awards, he said he was especially appreciative of Saturday’s honor.

“There’s nothing more satisfying in life than being recognized among the people and place where you grew up,” he said. “I want to tell you how much of a privilege it is to be a small part of the state’s history.”

Kate Milner Rabb was most famous for her columns about Indiana’s history and people in the Indianapolis Star. One, “A Hoosier Listening Post,” ran daily from 1920 to 1937. She also authored several books and was an avid Hoosier historian.

Her great-granddaughter, Julia Rabb Whitley, said her grandmother talked often about Rabb and her amazing career.

The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame is housed at IU’s Ernie Pyle Hall, where placards in the rear room of the library list members.

The hall now is taking nominations for the 2013 class of inductees. All materials are on the group’s website.

Dollinger works for Sports Illustrated’s online component and Sanserino works in print and Web at the newspaper.

The panelists and participants discussed student media and internships as central to building a portfolio and experience. One student asked about the advantages of internships at small organizations or well-known, large groups.

Ernie Pyle Scholar Charlie Scudder was one of the student producers. He and other scholars were spending the week at the Poynter Institute.

“But you don't get a big-name internship without working at a smaller place,” Sanserino wrote. “My recommendation would be to try to land both in college. Working at a big-name place will get you a look from future employers, but having the clips from a smaller place will get you a job.”

All three had numerous internships in college, and they worked in student media. Sanserino signed up to work at the IDS a few days before his freshman semester even started.

Landing the “real” job out of college is built on what you do before you graduate in other ways as well. Building the portfolio of clips, for example, starts early. Then, there’s networking.

“During my last semester, I started to let professors and friends at former internships know that I was looking for a job,” Dollinger wrote. “I utilized every contact I had. Eventually, someone let me know of an opening and I was able to get an interview. While the interview went well, I ultimately wouldn’t have gotten the job without recommendations from people I’d networked with.”

Once on the job, be ready to work hard. Really hard.

“Never say no to an opportunity,” Sanserino said. “When you are getting your start, you want to be the one your bosses turn to because you are always game for a challenge. If you are always willing to take on an assignment, you will eventually work assignments usually reserved for more veteran reporters.”

And don’t plan on getting rich, at least not right away.

“Be willing to do what you love for free (or almost free),” Dollinger wrote. “I moved to Atlanta to take a part-time job at SI.com because I knew it was what I wanted to do. It took me six (broke) months to become full time, but it was worth it.”

Students asked about rewards on the job, and the panelists shared highlights, such as Simon breaking news of Bin Laden's death and jumpstarting a national conversation with her coverage of Personhood. Sanserino's response was one any journalist — student or long-time pro — could understand.

"Nothing beats breaking a big story," he wrote. "You’re filled with this rush of adrenaline and a hint of nervousness. It’s a chase and a thrill."

Sophomore Kourtney Liepelt also worked as a producer. They had prepared the day before, with Quinn leading the students through the process of coming up with questions, preparing an introduction and structuring the order and pace of the chat.

“It’s a great way for journalists to interact and discuss important topics without ever having to leave their desks,” Quinn said.

Sophomore scholar Charlie Scudder, multimedia editor of the Indiana Daily Student, said he came to understand the difference between print and interactive reporting.

“Sometimes print deals with issues after the fact, but working with a live audience one-on-one can be even more informative,” Scudder said.

Associate professor and Ernie Pyle Scholars program director Jim Kelly said the live chat format could be incorporated into classes and events at the School of Journalism.

“Just as the Poynter Institute regularly puts on live chats featuring visitors to the institute, the school could possibly do live chats that feature the prominent visitors we often host,” Kelly said.

Fallon’s network, NBC, will broadcast the game live from Indy.

He said he relies on his journalism skills every day. He spent countless hours at the Indiana Daily Student as reporter, writer and editor. The experience taught him how to cultivate sources, cover events and view things from multiple perspectives, as well as helped launch his career.

“It’s really important to get as much experience as you can. Blogging and writing locally helps you build a nice repertoire of clips,” he said.

After graduating, Cohen moved to New York for an internship and ended up working as a music journalist at Billboard for nine years. Out of curiosity, he applied to Jimmy Fallon’s show after a friend told him about an open position.

He never thought he would get it.

“I had never worked in TV before,” he said. “There was a ton of learning experience on the job.”

Cohen learned to scout for musicians for the show by attending music festivals and following prominent music blogs and magazines. He attends a couple of music festivals a year for scouting. This year, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was nominated for an Emmy, so he attended the awards ceremony. He will attend the Grammy awards as well.

He also used his writing skills to write a book about his favorite band. Pearl Jam 20 took over a year to write, he said. Although it started out as just a biography, it turned into a year-by-year account of the band’s journey through obscurity, fame and comeback.

“It was an awesome experience. I had to take the fan part out of it, which was really hard,” he said. “I would totally do it again.”

While in Bloomington for the day, Cohen also spoke to two classes. Laucella said she worked with the NFL to get credentials, or passes, for the students for Media Day, which is Jan. 31, and Associated Press Sports Editors’ president Michael Anastasi supplied a credential for one student for game day.

“Brian Burnsed, a graduate assistant, will cover the game for Anastasi, who is managing editor at the Salt Lake Tribune,” Laucella said. “Brian came to us from U.S. News and World Report and is an intern at the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis. He’ll cover the game alongside a Tribune columnist.” Burnsed also will contribute stories to the NSJC website, which already has featured his work in the last few months.

Others with credentials are Bloomington undergraduates Avi Zaleon, Nathan Brown and Jeremy Smith, and IUPUI graduate students Jason Bailey, Josh Weinfuss and Andrew Crum. They are pitching story ideas to a committee made up of Laucella, Bloomington student media director Ron Johnson and NSJC Web editor Larra Overton. These events will be in the Super Bowl Village near Lucas Oil Stadium, which opens opens Jan. 27. On the schedule are parades, festivals, performances, exhibits and even a zipline between two tall downtown buildings.

Laucella said she is working with the NFL for additional access after Media Day to enable students to interview officials and organizers, but some stories won’t require anything but reporters’ curiosity and interviewing skills. For example, visitors and tourists, food vendors, local businesses or members of the Indianapolis committee who oversee the Super Bowl “experience” all have stories to tell.

One special event is open to all the students: a town hall-style meeting with veteran broadcaster Bob Costas is set for Thursday evening.

“The whole week offers great opportunities for any of our students as well as exposure for our program,” Laucella said. Student work will be featured on the NSJC website, for example, already one of the most-visited sports journalism websites in the country.

The center has sent students to many Indianapolis events, such as the Indianapolis 500, NCAA men’s and women's basketball Final Fours, and Big Ten football championship game, where they worked as teams to generate stories, video and photos.

“We have so many opportunities in Indianapolis and often are able to include Bloomington students,” Laucella said. “We glad to be able to offer these experiences to all the students.”

The AlienBees light kits include three studio flash heads and a camera strobe, each with a stand umbrella or light box. The kits also include grid reflectors, triggers, and accessories.

The new accessories may enable photojournalism students to enhance their skills or even go on to award-winning careers, following many alumni who made the funds possible. During last fall’s centennial celebration, the school staged a silent auction. Photojournalism alumni donated prints of their best work or favorite photos, then attendees to the Centennial Weekend in September bid on the photos, with proceeds going to purchase equipment.

“This opportunity enhances the connection between alumni and current students,” said Kelly, who conceived the auction with communications director Beth Moellers. “Students get to see great photographs and through them feel connection to photographers who worked out of Ernie Pyle in the past.”

Donors included John Ahlhauser, IU Professor Emeritus; Pulitzer Prize winner Michel du Cille, BA’85; and even a couple of more recent graduates. Some alumni turned in prints showing pride in Indiana. Joe Young, BA'56, donated a picture of President John F. Kennedy during the late president’s visit to the Indiana State Fair, and Angela Gottschalk, BA'86, donated a photograph of former men’s basketball coach Bobby Knight throwing a chair during a basketball game.

See copies of the photos that were in the auction on the first floor of Ernie Pyle Hall near the IDS and multimedia lab wing.

Copies of all 33 prints are exhibited on the first floor hallway walls in Ernie Pyle Hall.

Student Zach Hetrick has used the brand AlienBees for several years and conducted a tutorial for professor Steve Raymer and Jim Kelly shortly after the equipment arrived.
