Ed was a first-rate professional. Over a career spanning nearly 40 years he had an extraordinary knack for consistently being in the right place at the right time. He was also a mentor to numerous photographers starting out, many of whom eventually went on to have long and successful careers of their own.&quot;<br><br>The photojournalist had been moved this week from St. Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital to a local hospice center. Reinke had been hospitalized since Oct. 2 when he sustained a head injury at the Kentucky Speedway while preparing to cover the IZOD Kentucky Indy 300 race.<br><br>After college at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he worked for the Indiana Daily Student, Reinke was a staff photographer at The Cincinnati Enquirer beginning in 1972. He joined AP in Cincinnati in 1979, then transferred to the AP bureau in Washington, D.C., before returning to the Enquirer in 1983. When AP opened a bureau in Louisville in 1987, Reinke rejoined the AP in the new post.<br><br>AP reports that during his more than 25 years with the news organization, Reinke covered Super Bowls, World Series championships, Final Fours, Summer and Winter Olympics, Masters and PGA championships, the Indy 500, President Bill Clinton&#39;s first inauguration and Hurricane Andrew. And, starting in 1988, every Kentucky Derby.<br><br>His sons are posting information on a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/groups/toedreinke/" title="Facebook " tabindex="2" target="_new">Facebook </a>page, and they report that services are pending. Jackson Memorial Scholarship" tabindex="2">John M. Jackson Memorial Scholarship</a> established in honor of Jackson, an IU student who died in 1996 of a brain aneurysm. The IU senior had been IDS editor-in-chief the summer before his death.<br><br>Alumni, including JR Ross and other friends, started the outing in 2001 to keep Jackson&rsquo;s memory alive. He was 69.<br><br>McKeand had been publisher of the Sagamore newspaper at IUPUI and he had taught at the School of Journalism at that campus.&nbsp; Students established a scholarship in his honor. The Patrick J. McKeand &quot;Keep Your Nose to the Grindstone&quot; Scholarship Award is given annually to an IUPUI journalism student.<br><br>A U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam era, McKeand had been active in professional and scholastic journalism organizations. He had served on the national board of directors and as Region 5 director of the Society of Professional Journalists. She was 82.<br><br>She retired as features editor from the (Bloomington, Ind.) Herald-Times in 1993 and had worked as a reporter at the Plymouth (Ind.) Pilot-News, the Manhattan (Kan.) Tribute, the Wayne County Record in Fairfield, Ill., and the Delaware County (Pa.) Daily Times. She had been features editor at the Associated Press bureau in Philadelphia and had worked at the Indiana University Foundation when the late Bill Armstrong was director.<br><br>&ldquo;She was a crack editor, and, through her example, I learned to appreciate the order and logic of style and grammar,&rdquo; said the school&rsquo;s Web editor, <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=90" title="Gena Asher" tabindex="2">Gena Asher</a>, BA&rsquo;79, MLS/MIS&rsquo;03, who worked as one of Winkler&rsquo;s reporters at the H-T for several years. &ldquo;She also had a low-key calm about her that was welcome in the sometimes hectic pace of the newsroom.&rdquo;<br><br>After retirement, Winkler had more time to devote to School of Journalism alumni events. She also applied her editing skills to proofing copy for Newswire, the school&rsquo;s alumni magazine, with fellow alumnae Marge Blewett and Doris Brineman, both BA&rsquo;48.<br><br>&ldquo;Our tradition has been to go to lunch in the Indiana Memorial Union&#39;s Tudor Room before settling down to a marathon editing session in the Ernie Pyle Lounge, Merriam-Webster dictionaries and AP Stylebooks at hand,&rdquo; said Newswire editor <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=747" title="Anne Kibbler" tabindex="2">Anne Kibbler</a>, MA&rsquo;88, who also worked at the Herald-Times during Winkler&rsquo;s tenure. &ldquo;Liz took her time, but she was meticulous, tutting as she caught errant commas and typos &#8212; which she always did. We will miss her eagle eye and her dry humor. They pushed the school over 10,000 living alumni, they graduated during the school&rsquo;s centennial anniversary, and they helped IU take first place in a national writing competition.<br><br>Dean <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=182" title="Brad Hamm" tabindex="2">Brad Hamm</a> recounted these achievements during the school&rsquo;s reception for graduating seniors and their families at the IU Tennis Center Friday night, the eve of undergraduate commencement.<br><br>Winning the Hearst Intercollegiate Writing Competition for the second year in a row was icing on the cake for the seniors who had contributed to the win both years.<br><br>&ldquo;When we won, I said it was a once in a lifetime achievement that I wanted to repeat,&rdquo; Hamm told the crowd. &ldquo;Two weeks ago, the Hearst Foundation announced that the champions in writing would go to the Indiana University School of Journalism.&rdquo;<br><br>The crowd cheered and Hamm continued to talk about the achievements the school had experienced during the time these seniors had been at the school.<br><br>IU graduate Rebecca Neale, BAJ &rsquo;04, addressed the audience to give exiting seniors an idea of what the years after college might look like.<br><br>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s hard to believe that seven years ago, I stood where you are going to stand tomorrow and turned my tassel at Assembly Hall,&rdquo; Neale said. &ldquo;And I remember the conflicting emotions that I had back that same weekend seven years ago: the incredible excitement about what was to lie ahead of me, but some sadness and anxiousness about the uncertainty about what lay ahead of me.&rdquo;<br><br>Neale worked for two White House cabinet secretaries and the president of the United States before taking her current job as director of communications at Teach for America. Today, it&rsquo;s a symbol of pride and gratitude for the education I received here and it&rsquo;s a reminder that my alma mater helped put me on a path to success and continues to support me as an alum.&rdquo;<br><br>For most of the reception, though, students, their families, professors and staff chatted and reminisced.<br>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ll never forgot working on 812 with <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=108" title="Nancy Comiskey," tabindex="2">Nancy Comiskey,</a>&rdquo; said senior <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/bio/?person=1591" title="Megan Erbacher" tabindex="2">Megan Erbacher</a>, who was in the lecturer&rsquo;s fall class, <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/undergraduate/course-information-2/all-courses/course-description/?course=190" title="J360 Creating an Indiana Magazine" tabindex="2">J360 Creating an Indiana Magazine</a>, that produced 812 The Magazine of Southern Indiana. &ldquo;We worked so well together and it was a great experience.&rdquo;<br><br>Saturday, 289 journalism undergraduates received their degrees, 28 with degree honors reflecting GPAs of 3.7 or higher. He has taught visual communications, photojournalism editing, history of photography, graphic communication, computer design and informational graphics.<br><br>He is a past winner of several teaching awards and honors, including the Gretchen A. Kemp teaching award from the School of Journalism.<br><br>His research interests include magazine photojournalists working in the tradition of French humanism. She is author of numerous journal articles, including a monograph published the AEJMC journal, Journalism &amp; Communication Monographs, &quot;Melanin on the Margins: Advertising and the Cultural Politics of Fair/Light/White beauty in India.&rdquo; She is a frequent invited speaker to conferences and symposia around the globe.<br><br>Parameswaran has taught courses addressing these topics, such as <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/undergraduate/course-information-2/all-courses/course-description/?course=39" title="J375 Race, Gender and Media" tabindex="2">J375 Race, Gender and Media</a> and <a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/graduate/course-information/all-courses/course-description/?course=100" title="J614 Globalization, Media and Change" tabindex="2">J614 Globalization, Media and Change</a>, as well as courses in qualitative research methods, and advertising and consumer culture research. Her awards for teaching include the Gretchen A. She was 90.<br><br>Davis was one of the first successful female writers in Hollywood, making her name as part of a duo who wrote the scripts for the 1950s classic,<em> I Love Lucy</em>, starring Lucille Ball as a zany redhead married to a Cuban bandleader.<br><br>Davis, often called the &ldquo;girl writer,&rdquo; and writing partner Bob Carroll Jr. wrote the pilot for <em>I Love Lucy</em>, all the scripts during its six years on the air, scripts for other Lucille Ball shows and specials, some movies, and the two produced several sitcoms in the 1970s and 1980s.<br><br>In a School of Journalism phone<a href="http://journalism.indiana.edu/archive/news/20050916madelyn/" title=" interview" tabindex="2"> interview</a> in 2005, Davis talked about her book, <em>Laughing With Lucy</em>, which detailed Davis&rsquo; own journey along with the evolution of the show and Ball&rsquo;s later career.<br><br>&quot;None of us knew we were creating a classic that would endure, a show people would love so much that they memorize episodes and spout dialogue to you,&quot; she said. &ldquo;At that time, we just wanted to work.&quot;<br><br>In her book and the phone interview, Davis recalled her days as a teen at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and her time as a journalism student in Bloomington. She came to IU as an English and journalism major in the late 1930s, where she sharpened her skills as a reporter.<br><br>&quot;John Stempel was head of journalism then, and he was very stiff with us. You wouldn&#39;t want to tell him you made a mistake and you didn&#39;t want to miss a deadline,&quot; said Davis, who also was campus editor of the IDS.<br><br>Ernie Pyle was one of Davis&rsquo; heroes. His columns on the average soldier&#39;s experiences inspired her to be a foreign correspondent.<br><br>&quot;Someone pointed out that there were very few women foreign correspondents, but there were very few women anything, so it didn&#39;t bother me,&quot; she wrote in her book.<br><br>After graduation, Davis interviewed at all three Indianapolis newspapers and ended up taking a job writing radio spots for WIRE, an Indianapolis radio station. The book put Yette in the headlines and coincided with his dismissal from Newsweek, an action that resulted in a seven-year wrongful dismissal lawsuit.<br><br><em>The Choice</em> came to be used as a textbook on college campuses, where Yette himself headed to work as a professor, teaching journalism at Howard University for more than 10 years, and, in 2005, becoming a writer-in-residence at Knoxville College.<br><br>A native of Tennessee, Yette graduated from Tennessee State University, where he helped found a student newspaper, before coming to Bloomington to earn his master&rsquo;s degree in journalism. In his early career, he wrote for several publications before serving as executive secretary of the Peace Corps in the early 1960s.
