Capital News Online is a bi-weekly news magazine produced by graduate and undergraduate journalism students at Canada’s largest school of journalism at Carleton University. The students research, write, edit, and produce online stories about Canadian government affairs.

 

Columbia Scholastic Press Association Essays

Diversity Job Bank

Produced by the National Diversity Newspaper Job Bank, this site is a valuable resource for prospective employees in professional journalism. Users may submit resumes, search for job openings, or research organizations. The site also provides links to other employment resources.

 

Freep: Starting a J-program

This site provides useful information on how to start a journalism program at any school and also provides links to other resources to get advisers started.

 

Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication

The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma also won an AEJMC prize for design at the 2001 AEJMC event. It was designed by Keith Greenwood and Buddy Wiedemann. The site provides students with a variety of information and news items, including calendars, scholarship information, and course synopses.

 

Media History

Even though this site has not been updated since 1996 (resulting in a couple of dead links), it contains valuable journalism-related links to sites on such diverse issues as "Copyright Laws," "Writers, Journalists, Publishers and Other Personalities of Journalism History" and "Issues in Press History."

 

Media, Power and Culture

Gary Hanson built a site for Media, Power and Culture, a course that is a general elective class for non-majors at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University. More than 400 students were enrolled in the course. The site provides lecture notes, online study guides, and exam preparation resources. Students can also take short quizzes online. Hanson’s site won an award of excellence for design at the 2001 AEJMC (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication) convention.

This sample manual includes policy statements and job descriptions that could be used as a skeleton for any staff.
