Columbia Scholastic Press Association

CSPA is based at Columbia University in New York City and offers summer workshops, separate national conventions for high school and collegiate students and advisers in the spring, and several awards programs, including the Gold Circle and Gold and Silver Crown award competitions. CSPA also sponsors the Gold Key awards programs to honor distinguished advisers and professionals who have made significant contributions to CSPA or to scholastic journalism nationally. CSPA publishes a member newsletter and summer scholastic journalism workshop on the Franklin College campus.

 

Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association

Founded in 1927, the CSPAA is a professional organization of teachers/advisers devoted to the development of the student press in accordance with educational practices. Its purposes include: to function as an autonomous unit of the CSPA; to foster the interests and promote the professional status of advisers to student publications; to encourage sympathetic teamwork between faculty advisers (as the official representatives of their publications) and the school administrators and the community; to inaugurate and publish studies of problems relative to students' publications as well as pamphlets, bulletins and monographs for advisers.

 

Indiana High School Press Association

The IHSPA, based at Franklin College, is a member-based organization offering a variety of services for advisers and scholastic media. The IHSPA, one of the few such organizations which draws much of its annual income from a major endowment from the Pulliam Foundation, sponsors a two-day workshop in early October as well as the Hoosier Star student publications competitions. IHSPA also publishes a member newsletter and summer scholastic journalism workshops on the Franklin College campus.

 

Inland Press Association

The Inland Press Association, based in Chicago, is a newspaper association serves 860 newspaper members representing all 50 U.S. states, Canada and Bermuda. The association produces industry standard research in newspaper compensation and cost/revenue analyses. Inland also sponsors more than 30 training programs annually. The organization's Web site contains archived articles from its 3,700-circulation trade publication The Inlander.

 

Iowa High School Press Association

The purpose of this organization is to encourage interest in journalism and secondary school publications, raise the standards of secondary school publications and encourage the recognition of journalism as a separate and important course of study. In addition, the IHSPA seeks to encourage secondary school publications to accept responsibility as a vital means of communication with the community about school aims and activities and to encourage students with journalism aptitudes to continue in the field of journalism. Lastly, they advocate the adoption of a minimum standard requirement of a minor in journalism or a minimum of 18 hours in journalism for teachers of journalism. This site provides links to their newsletter, membership informtion, as well as information on the journalism school at the University of Iowa.

 

Journalism Education Association

The Journalism Education Association is the national professional organization of high school and middle school journalism teachers and student media advisers. JEA sponsors a comprehensive scholastic journalism bookstore (JEA members receive a discount on all orders), two national conventions for media advisers and their students, co-sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association, a national teacher certification program (CJE, MJE), summer workshops and several national awards and scholarship programs. JEA publishes a quarterly magazine, C:JET (Communication: Journalism Education Today) and is based at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.

 

Journalism Teachers Only

This site is packed with information for (you guessed it) – journalism teachers. Everything from a "Teacher Survival Guide" to a "Style/Writing Guide" is featured along with information on First Amendment rights and many other journalism related topics.

 

National Scholastic Press Association

The NSPA is a student-oriented national press association for high school and middle school students. The NSPA offers comprehensive critical services for member and nonmember schools and publications. NSPA also cosponsors national student media conventions with JEA, one in November in the Midwest or East Coast and one in April in the West. NSPA sponsors numerous awards contests, including the national Pacemaker competitions for student media and Best of Show contests at national conventions and workshops. NSPA publishes Trends in High School Publications and other resource materials, including comprehensive critiques and is affiliated with the Associated Collegiate Press, the national collegiate student media organization.

 

North Carolina Scholastic Media Association

The North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) serves scholastic journalism and works for its advancement. Member schools include junior high and high schools in North Carolina. A few elementary schools are also members. During the year, NCSMA offers members special services, including a four-day summer institute, fall and spring regional workshops, publication critiques, and yearly contests for individuals and publications. The organization also mails members a bi-monthly newsletter during the school year. Advisers may call on the director to conduct one- or two-day workshops in their schools or to work with them on special in-school programs. Membership in NCSM Advisers Association is $10 for the annual period Aug. 1 - July 31.

 

Quill & Scroll

Quill and Scroll, based at the University of Iowa, is the international honorary society for high school journalism with active student chapters in schools across America and in a few foreign countries. The organization sponsors its national Gallop awards program for scholastic publications as well as national high school yearbook contest. It publishes a quarterly magazine, Quill and Scroll, available for member schools and by subscription.

 

Society of Professional Journalists

Anyone already a member of the Society of Professional Journalists or who is interested in joining will find this site to be a valuable tool. Information about conventions and links to SPJ programs and committees are among the many web site features.
