Patil in education in Hong Kong

Published: January 19, 2006

School of Journalism alumni have found jobs all over the world, careers that build on their journalism studies. This series by Suzannah Evans asked some of those alumni to reflect on their careers.

Cara Soh Patil, B.A. '93

Hometown: Singapore

Current residence: Hong Kong SAR

Job: International Learning Centre Manager at Australian International School, Hong Kong

Describe your typical workday:
I check my emails and voice messages and talk to parents about the enrollments of their children into our Saturday programs. I also interview new teachers to teach in our classes and take care of all the logistics and allocate resources for the teachers. At the same time, I write the curriculum for every term, create new marketing strategies to reach out to new parents of the general public.

Is this where you imagined you'd end up?
Never in my wildest dream! I've been to Adelaide, Australia, only once in my life and now I find myself working with Australians and learning all about their curriculum (and the Aussie slang).

What's your proudest professional moment so far?
When I see the happy faces of children coming out of their classrooms.

What's your favorite memory of Bloomington or IU?
My favorite memory of IU is the Dunn Meadow outside IMU during fall and the sounds of Jordan River running through it.

Tell us something about where you live that we don't know.
Although Hong Kong is known to be a mega city, there are many beautiful hills and mountains here that are great for hiking. Once you hit the bushes, you feel as though you are in a different country altogether and the stresses of living in a big city just melts away.

Are you a graduate living and working overseas? The School of Journalism would like to hear from you as well. Contact Suzannah Evans (sudevans@indiana.edu) to fill out a short survey and let your classmates know about your exotic home and work.
