Poynter deadline Oct. 23
Poynter deadline Oct. 23

Published: Sep. 28, 2006

The deadline for the Poynter Scholarship, one of the top academic awards at the School of Journalism, is Oct. 23.

The scholarship provides a grant worth several thousand dollars and a summer internship on the St. Petersburg (Florida) Newspapers for a student who will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism (BAJ) degree by May 2008.

A committee of journalism faculty appointed by the dean chooses the recipient based on outstanding scholarship and dedication to news-editorial journalism.

The scholarship honors the Poynter family, many of whom wre long prominent in Indiana journalism, and especially Nelson Poynter, a former editor in chief of the Indiana Daily Student and, later, the founder of Congressional Quarterly and the publisher of the St. Petersburg Times.

How to apply:

Pick up applications in the Ernie Pyle Hall office (EP 200).

Submit six copies of all materials (application, statement of purpose and examples of work).

Turn in your applications to Linda Long in the office no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 23.

During the selection process, candidates will be screened on the basis of their completed applications, and only candidates deemed qualified by the committee will be invited to the personal interviews.

Students selected for interviews will be notified by e-mail. Interview sessions are important in helping the committee make difficult choices, and students should be prepared to discuss any items contained in the application as well as journalism in general.
