Graduate student Suzannah Evans won first and third place awards in the 2005 Virginia Press Association News, Editorial and Photo Contest.

Evans, who was a reporter for the Loudoun Connection in Leesburg, Va., before beginning her master's work here last fall, won a first place for a business story on adjustable rate mortgages. Judges called it "terrific business writing that related the subject matter to the average reader."

She also won a third place in the news series category for stories that "did a nice job of showing readers how the sheriff's office works."
