Looking Back

Indiana University's journalism program dates back 100 years, and through that time many students and professors, programs and events have left their mark. Journalism at IU celebrated 100 years in 2011, and alumni continue to reflect on their years as contributors to what has become one of the nation's leaders in preparing young journalists for whatever challenges await them.

Looking Back: The Columns

Longtime administrator, former Indiana Daily Student editor and alumna Marjorie Smith Blewett (BA '48) writes a column for the alumni magazine, Newswire, in which she relies on several decades of her own experiences at the school, her archives and her spot-on institutional knowledge to reminisce with readers. She's written about women editors-in-chief of the Daily Student, described treasure troves found in alumni basements and retold many stories about professors both feared and revered (often simultaneously).

Remember when?

Ralph Holsinger
Ralph Holsinger

Anyone who took professor Ralph Holsinger's editing course will recall his surprise news quizzes, his admonishments not to "tinker" while copy editing and his slideshow of "bad" headlines.

Click the link below to see a slideshow as you imagine Holsinger instructing your class on newspaper headlines that did not quite work. (Thanks to Margie Holsinger for sending the slides.)

Holsinger taught journalism at IU from 1965 to 1989 and is a member of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.
