Alumni Board Membership Guidelines

Members of the School of Journalism Alumni Board represent the interests and concerns of the school’s alumni of its Bloomington and Indianapolis programs. They serve as advisers and advocates for the school and plan, participate in and evaluate alumni efforts for the school. Membership on the board involves certain requirements and understandings.

Board members:

  • must be dues-paying members of the Indiana University School of Journalism Alumni Association at the time of election to the Alumni Board.
  • serve a three-year term. Members seeking additional terms must be presented to the Nominating Committee of the Board for consideration. Re-election is not automatic.
  • are expected to attend the two annual meetings of the board. The fall meeting is held in Bloomington, and the winter meeting is held in Indianapolis.
  • are expected to serve on a committee of the board.
  • are not reimbursed for travel or other expenses associated with board meetings. Members are permitted to claim a tax-deduction for their expenses, provided they complete an expense report and submit it to the school. The IU Foundation will provide a receipt for tax purposes.
  • are not required to provide financial support to the school. Nevertheless, the school encourages all board members to participate in the school’s annual fund-raising campaign. All contributions to the school are tax deductible to the extent that the law allows.
  • The School of Journalism Alumni Association sponsors and contributes to a variety of social functions that the school holds for students, faculty and alumni each year. The school invites and appreciates board member attendance at these functions.
