Graduate Admission FAQs

Here are a few frequently asked questions about the application process:

Is there a required GRE minimum score?

We have no minimum requirement, but successful candidates for both the M.A. and the Ph.D. program tend to achieve scores above 600 on both the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam. On the analytical writing section, we like to see scores above 5.0 on a 6.0 scale.

Is there a required minimum grade point average?

We expect applicants to have achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale at all academic institutions they’ve attended.

Are writing samples required as part of the application?

Writing samples are not required, but you are welcome to send them, with your other application materials, to:

Is a resume required as part of the application?

Resumes are not required, but you are welcome to send a resume with your other application materials, to:
School of Journalism

How is my application evaluated?

All applications, whether M.A. or Ph.D., are evaluated by our graduate committee, made up of six to seven graduate studies faculty members in the School of Journalism.

How soon will I get an answer?

After the School of Journalism has received all application materials (application with statement of purpose, transcripts, three recommendation letters, GRE scores and TOEFL if required), the graduate committee evaluates that application. Admission decisions are made first, followed by decisions about fellowships and assistantships.

Master’s degree applicants typically will receive both an admission and funding (fellowship or assistantship) decision within three to four weeks of submitting their completed materials.
Doctoral degree applicants typically will receive an admission decision within three to four weeks of submitting their completed materials.
Decisions regarding doctoral fellowship and assistantship awards are made in February for the upcoming fall semester and in November for the upcoming spring semester.
