Students entering IU before Fall 2007 will study under a slightly different set of requirements from students entering IU in Fall 2007 or afterward.

Below are the requirement for the students entering before Fall 2007.
Students are required to complete 31 credits in journalism.
Required journalism courses (19 credits) for the journalism major:

Second Concentration
We also require a second concentration, in-depth study in another area outside journalism. Twenty-four credit hours, about eight courses, are required for this part of the degree. Many of our students complete a second major in the College of Arts and Sciences.
General Education
For general education, we require:
- Two composition courses
- One college-level mathematics course
- Two years of college-level foreign language
- One statistics course
- Three cultural studies courses
- Twelve courses total in Arts & Humanities, Social & Historical Studies, and Natural & Mathematical Sciences, including:
- One U.S. History course
- One American Political Science course
- One Economics course
- One Literature or FINA "A" or "H" course
