Indiana University School of Journalism

Wanted: Web Reporters

Interested in working for the school’s “front door” to the public, the School of Journalism Web site?

The school Web site editor is looking for reporters to report, write and shoot photos for the news section of the Web site.

The IU School of Journalism Web site’s audience consists of current students, high school students and their parents looking at colleges, alumni keeping in touch with their alma mater and friends of the school.

WHAT:
The news section of the Web site operates as a news bureau, with two or three reporters, some freelancers and an editor who oversees the team. Stories consist of news features about events, activities and people at the school.

What’s in it for you?
  • Clips demonstrating your online writing abilities.
  • One-on-one mentoring with editor, who will help you polish and improve your skills.
  • Pay for your work. Pay is hourly, and most stories range from two to five hours to complete. Upon story assignment, editor will instruct reporter on approximate number of hours it should take to complete the story.

WHEN:

Reporters work a few hours a week, depending on story assignments, which are made as far in advance as possible.

WHO:

Candidates are those with a solid understanding of news feature construction (lead, nut graph). Applicants also should be proficient photographers as several photos are required per story. Reporters must meet deadlines and have a willingness to work with editor to improve and polish their work.
