Biography

Professor Shannon E. Martin is a member of the journalism faculty and previously served as chair of the communication and journalism department at the University of Maine, Orono, and on the faculty at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
She earned her M.A. at IU's School of Journalism and her Ph. D. from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her students are now members of the faculty at the Pratt Institute, Fordham University and City University of New York.
Prof. Martin’s research focuses on public access to government information and she recently authored a book, The Freedom of Information Act: News the Media Use, published by Peter Lang, Inc.
Other books include Bits, Bytes and Big Brother: Federal Information Control in the Technological Age (Praeger); Post-Vietnam Confrontations: U.S. Wars and the Media in Primary Documents, co-authored (Greenwood); Newspapers of Record in a Digital Age: From Hot Type to Hot Link, co-authored (Praeger); The Function of Newspaper in Society, co-edited (Greenwood).
She served as the lead researcher on a U.S. AID grant with Tanzania for journalist training, and was a Fulbright Senior Scholar to the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Her research publications include articles in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Newspaper Research Journal, Information and Communication Technology Law Journal, South Carolina Law Review, Texas Wesleyan Law Review, Journal of Communication Law and Policy and Journal of Peace Research.
