Biography

Professor Reynolds teaches law and broadcast journalism. Prior to joining the IU School of Journalism in 2000, she was an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma and at Miami University of Ohio. She has previous journalism experience as a television reporter, producer and news director. Her print journalism experience is as a newspaper reporter and as managing editor of an alternative wire service. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Texas (1998).

Chapters in several books, including Media Effects: Advances in Theory and Research (2nd. Ed.) and Media Representations of September 11th. Co-edited the forthcoming (2005) Communications & Law: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Research with Brooke Barnett, as well as The Poll with a Human Face: The National Issues Convention Experiment in Political Communication (1999) with Maxwell McCombs. A primary document historical reader, Northern Press Coverage of the Civil War, was published in 2005.

Research summary

Professor Reynolds' research focuses on dissent and the First Amendment, including how the abolitionists conceptualized their free speech/free press rights in the early nineteenth century. She has had articles published in Communication Law and Policy, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and the Journal of International Communication and has contributed chapters to several books. Prof. Reynolds is currently editing a book that focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to the study of communication law and is conducting several social science and legal studies that focus on both contemporary and historical conceptualizations of dissent in America.
