Biography
Professor Kelly teaches photojournalism and graphic journalism. Prior to joining the IU School of Journalism in 2007, he was an associate professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has previous journalism experience as a news wire and newspaper photographer. He has headed several projects since 1990 aimed at strengthening journalism in South Asia and East Africa. His Ph.D. is from Indiana University (1990).

Research
Associate Professor Professor Kelly's research focuses on the role of journalists, especially photojournalists, in the production of news. He has articles published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Visual Communication Quarterly, International Communication Gazette, and, The Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics. Prof. Kelly was Editor and Designer of Visual Communication Quarterly from 1996 to 2001 and sits on the editorial boards of Visual Communication Quarterly and Newspaper Research Journal. He is has worked extensively in South Asia and East Africa on a series of projects aimed at strengthening journalism practice and education.
