He also loves journalism. Wright is looking to combine his two interests by applying for, and hopefully enrolling in, one of the School of Journalism’s four travel courses offered next semester.

“To travel and focus on journalism is amazing,” Wright said. “The courses will help me define what I want to do in my career and decide what I want in life.”

Wright was one of a handful of journalism students who attended Wednesday night’s travel course information session, where a student panel, professors and Director of Experiential Learning and Recruitment Kathleen Lee spoke to students about the benefits of these courses.

Lee explained the application procedures to enroll in a course. The important thing for students to understand, she said, is that deadline to submit applications for the courses is noon Oct. 1. This is a firm deadline. Because applications are online, the computer system will not accept applications past 12 p.m.

Wright is debating focusing on public relations or magazine reporting, and he said the travel course to Tokyo appeals to him.

Ralph Winslow Visiting Professor Jim Bright teaches the Tokyo travel course, J460 International Public Relations, where students travel to Japan to explore media culture. Bright gave a list of top 10 reasons why to apply. The No. 1 reason, he said, is because “it will change your life forever.”

But he said all the courses, not just the Tokyo course, will change students’ lives forever. Students also may apply for J460 From London to Paris, which takes them to London, Normandy and Paris to follow in the footsteps of World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle; for J460 Technology, Change and News, which takes them to Seoul, South Korea, to explore the convergence of media and technology; and for J460 Media in Latin America, which takes them to Santiago, Chile, to focus on journalism in South America.

Lee explained the costs of the trips, the deadlines and what to expect upon acceptance. The cost to students is $1,250 with a $500 deposit upon acceptance into a course. Students should also make sure that they have a passport, and if they don’t, then they should apply for one immediately upon acceptance.

With the exception of Chile, all trips occur during spring break, Lee said. Students travel to Chile in May at the end of the semester because it takes a long time to get to Chile, and the timing is more appropriate to interact with Chilean students at the local university. The Chile course also requires that students have at least some previous coursework and proficiency in Spanish.

Students will be notified about their selection by Oct. 16. The Tokyo and Ernie Pyle trips each accept 16 students, and the Chile and Korea trips each accept 15 students.

Natalie Avon, left, and Nicole St. Pierre talked about their experiences traveling abroad last spring. They were panelists who told prospective students about travel courses during an info session Wednesday.

Lee said she encourages students to talk to the faculty members teaching the courses about any concerns. The application is a chance for students to express their interests in travel and the courses in particular. Preference is given to seniors, but all students can apply.

Senior Clare Krusing, one of the students on the panel, traveled to Korea last semester. She chose Korea because it had never occurred to her to travel there. Krusing said she loved the trip and experience and would recommend it to anyone.

“What I loved about the trip is that we got to look at the future of journalism and what’s going to happen five to 10 years from now,” Krusing said. “It was great preparation for the future.”

Students also immerse themselves in local culture, both that of media organizations and the people of the countries. Senior Natalie Avon, another student on the panel, talked about the cultural experience.

“We took at two hour horseback ride in the Andes,” Avon said. “That was my life changing experience.”

Krusing said classmates boned throughout the semester and trip, so her advice for students is to choose the trip not based on if friends are going.

“Your friends will still be here,” she said. “Meet new people. You will have a great time.”

Junior Darcy Marlett plans to apply for the Ernie Pyle course. She said she appreciates the School of Journalism’s opportunities such as travel courses.

“I’ve never left the country and I love the opportunity to see so many places in a week,” Marlett said. “I love history courses. I would like to see Normandy; both of my grandfathers were in World War II.”

Lee said these are unique experiences both in a journalism sense and in an educational sense.

“You can’t do journalism in a vacuum,” she said. “These courses give students the taste of the world around them in a safe and affordable environment.”

More?

Read students’ blogs about their trips last spring.

Contact Lee by e-mail or drop in the main office at Ernie Pyle Hall to talk to her.

Read more about school travel on the Web site.

Check out the Forms page to see the application online.
