Nearly 90 students earn scholarships, awards (April 18)

Several hundred people plan to attend the School of Journalism Scholarship Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union, and more than 100 of them will leave with funds to be used to offset the costs of college.

Students who will receive scholarships applied earlier this year to be considered for the awards, most of which are funded by alumni, the school and other donors. Many students will attend with their families. Dean Brad Hamm and other faculty and staff will host the ceremony and many of the donors themselves will attend to meet the students who are awarded the funds.

The school has notified winners and requires that they attend the ceremony as part of the scholarship process.

Metzgar to serve on ‘New Media and Politics’ panel

Assistant professor Emily Metzgar will serve as a discussant for a panel titled "New Media and Politics" at the Midwest Political Science Association annual conference in Chicago April 2-5.

Media LLC hosts open mic night

The School of Journalism Media Living Learning Center is hosting an Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. April 1 in the Grand Hall at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.

The event benefits the Pourhouse Cafe’s charity of the month of April, which provides clean water in India. The Pourhouse Café will provide coffee for participants and attendees.

New York Times’ Lee to lecture Thursday

New York Times reporter and book author Jennifer 8. Lee will talk at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ernie Pyle Auditorium.

New York Times reporter and author Jennifer 8. Lee will talk about her work covering cultural trends and about her book, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, when she visits at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Ernie Pyle Auditorium.

The School of Journalism and the Asian Culture Center are co-sponsoring her lecture.

Lee’s book examines the evolution of Chinese cuisine in America, starting with the fact that there are more Chinese restaurants in the U.S. than McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC combined, according to the book’s Web site.

This led Lee, 33, to travel the world to find the origins of Chinese food. She found that no one in General Tso’s Chinese hometown had ever heard of the popular dish and that fortune cookies originated in Japan. The book also is part memoir, sharing her own story as a child of immigrants.

At the Times, she has written about poverty, the environment, crime, politics and technology. But she also has written about off-beat topics, such as what straight men talk about when they can’t talk about sports (the Man Date) or trends in baby names.

As for her own name, the figure 8 is her legal middle name. Her parents did not give her a middle name, so she chose “8” because it is connotes “prosperity” in Chinese, according to her bio at her publisher’s Web site.

Metzgar named Service Learning Fellow

Assistant professor Emily Metzgar has been selected as an IU Office of Service Learning Fellow for the 2009-2010 academic year. Fellows explore issues related to service-learning and community-based research. They serve as resources for other instructors seeking to start such programs.

IU hosts ICPA conference

More than 150 college students from around the state will gather in Bloomington Saturday for the Indiana Collegiate Press Association conference.

The day-long conference at Ernie Pyle Hall and in the Indiana Memorial Union includes workshops and talks on topics from changing media to legal issues to design trends.

Among the speakers are School of Journalism adjunct lecturer Nancy Comiskey; Student Media Director Ron Johnson; and Cory Schouten, journalism alumnus and reporter/blogger for Indianapolis Business Journal.

ICPA’s members include 42 publications—newspapers, news magazines, literary magazines, yearbooks and online publications—at 33 of Indiana’s public and private universities.

After lunch, ICPA will conduct elections and hand out annual awards for winners of its media contest.

Columnist assures students of ‘need for journalists’

Even amid industry changes and cutbacks, Bloomington Herald-Times theater reviewer, arts supporter and businessman Joel Pierson is upbeat about the future of journalism.

“It’s a good time to be a journalist,” he told adjunct lecturer Irene Bushaw’s J200 Reporting, Writing and Editing I class March 12. “There’s always going to be a need for journalists and journalistic integrity.”

Pierson has written a weekly theater column for the newspaper for six years, previewing and reviewing performances. He also writes features for other H-T products, including Business Network and Homes and Lifestyles magazines.

He offered reassurance to journalism students that there is a place for the profession and he offered tips to help them get started.

“When you know what you have to get, just get your work down,” he said. “Reread and rewrite. Have you ever met a baby who’s ready to take on the world? Unless it’s a sea turtle, no.”

The benefits are worth the work, he said. Pierson claims that being a journalist gives him the opportunity to make peoples’ lives better.

“I love to be able to write to people,” he said. “When someone comes up to me and says ‘thank you, I needed that,’ that can keep me going all week.”

A resident of Bloomington for more than a decade, Pierson balances being a journalist, arts supporter and business owner. He is artistic director for Mind’s Ear Audio Productions and is editorial services coordinator at Author Solutions, the largest print-on-demand publishing company in the world. A playwright himself, Pierson’s play, “Mourning Lori,” was produced two years ago at the John Waldron Arts Center.

“Time management is a juggling act like anything else,” Pierson said. “It’s exhausting being me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“Uncovering Islam: Representing, reporting and responsibilities,” a workshop for journalists, media professionals and students, gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center.

Sponsored by IU’s Center for the Study of Global Change, the workshop features National Public Radio’s Jamie Tarabay, correspondent and former Baghdad bureau chief. Other speakers include School of Journalism associate professor Steve Raymer speaking on how photojournalists frame the Arab and Muslim world. Journalism professor emerita Chris Ogan and professor Lars Willnat will moderate two of the workshop sessions.

The workshop is part of an ongoing project, “Voices and Visions of Islam and Muslims from a Global Perspective,” which aims to build intercultural between Muslims and non-Muslims through programming, according to organizers. Programming includes a Web site with informational material; two podcast series, Muslim Voices and Crash Course in Islam; and events and art exhibits.

The workshop is free but organizers request that those interested register. All information is online.

CBS’ Steve Kroft lectures Tuesday

Veteran broadcaster and Kokomo native Steve Kroft will talk about his long career at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. He is the second guest of the School of Journalism’s spring Speaker Series, a program that brings free lectures to the Bloomington area.

Kroft, 63, has been with CBS News for 28 years, 20 of those spent working at 60 Minutes, the weekly news magazine. Kroft has interviewed President Barack Obama twice since the presidential election, most recently for a 60 Minutes segment March 22.

While he has interviewed many politicians and newsmakers over his career, Kroft also was the first American journalist to report from the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. His work has led him to interview eco-terrorist groups, smugglers, international leaders and government bureaucrats. Before joining 60 Minutes, he was an international correspondent based in London who covered hijackings, wars and other conflicts.

Kroft is a recipient of three George Foster Peabody Awards and 11 Emmy awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy for his body of work. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and earned a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Indiana University.

Johnson named Fulbright Chair

Associate professor Owen V. Johnson has been named the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in East European Studies at the University of Warsaw for fall semester 2009. He plans to teach courses on the history of communist media and on the history of journalism in Europe.
