For example, it’s never too early to think about internships.

“You can’t wait to start looking for internships,” said Sanserino, who has interned at the South Bend Tribune, Fort Wayne News Sentinel and, as a Poynter Scholar, the St. Petersburg Times. He now is an IDS managing editor. “You have to be proactive and work quickly.”

Kaylyn Easton, who spent her internship at WTHR-TV in Indianapolis this summer, told students that their first internship may not include experiences in all phases of television, for example. But their second ones should.

“You may not have a tape or anything to show that you can do the work for that first one, but you’ll have to have that if you expect to get an internships in TV that will give you the chance to do standups, reports or editing,” said the executive director of IUSTV.

And how to get those tapes, that experience? The four students pointed to media organizations around campus, including the IDS, IUSTV, WIUX radio and other print and Web publications. Their advice: Don’t wait to take advantage of those, either.

“I’ve done all the jobs at IUSTV and this gave me an edge in getting internships,” said Easton, who started working at the student-run TV station as a freshman. “Student media is key. Everyone will get a degree but not everyone will put in the extra effort which gives them an edge.”

Sanserino recounted his experience when he sat in the auditorium as a freshman three years ago. He already had applied to the IDS while visiting campus that summer for freshman orientation, and, on the first day of classes, he was working on his first IDS piece.

Avon worked for a London publisher and Alexander was an intern at a London newspaper. They counseled students to be prepared to work hard during internships, to be able to complete many tasks, from “writing a Web spot to taking photos,” Avon said.

“When I started at the IDS, I worked as a designer, but then I got interested in reporting and photography,” she said. “It’s a great way to get that experience so that you can do all the things expected of you during an internship.”

From left, Kaylyn Easton, Mike Sanserino, Lindsey Alexander and Natalie Avon formed a panel to share their journalism experiences with new journalism majors.

Assistant professor Lesa Hatley Major, also a panelist, and the four students told freshmen to network with one another, with their instructors, advisers and people such as Career Services Director Marcia Debnam to find out about jobs, internships and post-graduate career opportunities.

Also on hand were student leaders of media groups. One of the aims of the program, created three years ago, is to provide journalism experiences to the program’s high achievers.

“These 18 new students were chosen from a pool of applicants twice as large as in previous years,” professor Dave Boeyink told the audience at a reception for Ernie Pyle Scholars Thursday in the Weil Journalism Library. “The average SAT score among the 18 new scholars is 1356, ACT is 30.3 and GPA is 3.88.”

As he introduced the students, those statistics bore out. Among the group are a Wells Scholar, a Cox Scholar, two IU Hutton Honors College scholars and several with state scholarships. Many also had attended HSJI during high school and picked up an array of awards and honors there.

Armed with talent, students will be challenged to make the most of the opportunities ahead. School of Journalism Dean Brad Hamm recounted the summer’s experiences of the first group of scholars who spent eight weeks working in London this summer.

“As important as classes are, we’d like to encourage you to spend time outside class in programs that take you abroad,” he said, describing the Summer in London program and two semester-long courses, In the Footsteps of Ernie Pyle and International Public Relations. Times since he graduated from IU.

“Tom clearly is one of the best writers and teachers of writing in the world today,” said Bradley J. Hamm, dean of the School of Journalism.

French’s work has set the standard for a generation of reporters, according to Washington Post reporter Anne Hull, whose work helped the Post earn the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for public service.

“He wrote a seminal piece of journalism called ‘A Cry In The Night’ that dominated our craft for a long time and made a model for the rest of us to follow,” Hull said. “He’s been my teacher since the day I met him. IU will soon get a glimpse of his passion and ferocious belief that journalism should be fair and truthful but also raucous, subversive, emotional and daring."

French will serve as the Riley Endowed Chair in Journalism, named for J. Stewart Riley, former owner and publisher of the (Bloomington, Ind.) Herald-Telephone (now the Herald-Times) and Bedford Times Mail. Riley also was an IU trustee.

In an announcement to the newspaper staff, St. Petersburg Times executive editor Neil Brown said French is “in the small group of writers who led the renaissance in newspaper narratives in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and he is known around the world for his evangelism on the subject — which is why IU came calling.”

French was awarded the Pulitzer for “Angels & Demons,” a series that chronicled the murder of an Ohio woman and her two teenage daughters. Two of his other serials, “A Cry in the Night” and “South of Heaven,” were later published as books. His most recent project, “Zoo Story,” explored the inner world of Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo (to be published in 2009).

In addition to his reporting, French has led workshops across the U.S. and around the world, from the Nieman conference at Harvard to newsrooms in Dubai, Singapore and Johannesburg. French is a Writing Fellow at the Poynter Institute and teaches in a nonfiction masters program at Goucher College outside Baltimore.

David Finkel, who won the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting in 2006, said French has the ability to inspire both students and veteran journalists alike.

“Tom has so many strengths. One is that he knows how to do journalism. He has a body of work that students can study and learn from, which I think is the best way for a student to learn,” Finkel said. “Second, he knows how to explain journalism. I’ve heard him teach many times and every time I’ve walked away excited by the possibilities of what we do.”

As a teacher, French draws on his reporting experiences but doesn’t rely solely on “war stories,” said Roy Peter Clark, vice president and senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists, future journalists and teachers of journalism where French also is an adjunct faculty member.

French’s participation at the institute started when, as an undergraduate, he won a Poynter scholarship. While at IU, he also was editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student.

French recently visited campus as keynote speaker for the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 5 conference in April.
