Claude Cookman is a Hoosier, a native of Anderson. Before teaching, he
worked more than 18 years in journalism, primarily as a photography editor
at the Associated Press in New York City, The Louisville Times
and The Miami Herald. He shared in the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for
Feature Photography awarded to the Times and Courier-Journal
photographic staff for its coverage of busing for racial integration in
the Louisville-Jefferson County schools.
He
earned an MS in journalism from Columbia University, an MFA in art history
and a Ph.D. in the history of photography, both from Princeton University.
He wrote his dissertation on Henri Cartier-Bresson. He is the author of
a history of the National Press Photographers Association, a book about
the Swiss photographer Werner Bischof and several journal articles on
the history of photography.
In
his 11 years at IUB he has taught numerous courses and seminars in the
history of photography. His teaching has been recognized with six awards.
